Looking for a budget-friendly and convenient stay in Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad)? This Youth Hostel is just 1 KM from the railway station and is a great option for students, interns, solo travellers and families.

Dormitory stays start at around ₹150, rooms around ₹600, and students can get up to 50% discount. Some Youth Hostels also have options around ₹300, making them a great choice for long stays, internships, training or college work.

One interesting thing I noticed is that many of the older Youth Hostel buildings, especially those built around the 70s–80s, have a very similar architecture and design. Simple, practical and made for travellers on a budget.

Lonar Lake: The Day It Turned Pink

During the 2020 lockdown, Maharashtra’s Lonar Lake suddenly changed from green to pink.

🗓️ Pink: The major change happened around 31 May–5 June 2020, and was clearly visible by 10 June.
🌧️ Back towards green: By around 22 July 2020, after the monsoon rains, the lake was returning to its original colour.

Why?

☀️ Less rain + strong evaporation
→ 🧂 salt concentration increased
→ 🦠 salt-loving haloarchaea multiplied
→ 🩷 their carotenoid pigments made the lake look pink.

Then the monsoon came:

🌧️ Rainwater diluted the lake
→ 🧂 salinity decreased
→ 🦠 pink microbes declined
→ 🌿 green algae became dominant again
→ 💚 the lake turned green.

Think of it like vegetables: green capsicum changes colour as chlorophyll breaks down and other pigments become visible; carrots get their orange colour from carotenoids. Lonar’s case was different, but the basic idea is similar—change the conditions, and the dominant pigments change what we see.

☀️ Evaporation → Salt ↑ → Haloarchaea ↑ → PINK 🩷 → Rain → Dilution → Green algae ↑ → GREEN 💚

Nature looked like magic. The science was microbiology.

Wagh Mahadev Temple, Lonar Lake

A Hidden Gem

Eyewitness Account of the Attack on Sukhbir Badal

I am an eyewitness to the incident involving Sukhbir Singh Badal. I was present at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji, located about 15 kilometres from Nanded on the banks of the Godavari River, and I personally witnessed what happened.

At around 1:45 PM, Sukhbir Badal came out of the gurdwara after spending about 10–15 minutes inside. As soon as he came outside, the attack took place.

I was in the lower part of the gurdwara having sharbat. Some security personnel were with him, while others were having langar. As soon as the incident happened, I saw security personnel running towards the spot, some without even wearing their footwear.

The attacker’s turban had come off during the incident. When the police took him into custody, he asked to put his turban back on first. A Sikh man helped him put it back on, and the police then took him away.

The entire incident was brought under control within roughly five minutes. Sukhbir Badal was moved away, the attacker was detained, and despite hundreds of people being present, there was no major commotion. The congregation remained calm, and within minutes everything became normal again.

What also surprised me was the low-profile security. When Sukhbir Badal and Harsimrat Kaur Badal arrived, many people at the gurdwara did not even realize they were there. Unlike what one might expect in Punjab, there was no highly visible security presence or obvious indication that such prominent political leaders were visiting.

I am sharing this as a firsthand account because I was there and saw the incident myself.

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal was reportedly attacked by an unidentified person while visiting Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji, Dhumakot, Nanded, Maharashtra. His wife was reportedly with him. Maharashtra Police have detained the alleged attacker. Further details are awaited.
