Nestled amongst the lofty trees of the forest, is this harmless reptile that you'll rarely ever see slithering on the ground, and this is why it's called the Bronzeback Tree Snake.

With a long slender body that camouflages brilliantly, it's almost invisible in the canopy of the jungle, gliding smoothly on the barks and branches. Often easily mistaken for a creeper or a vine, this works tremendously in its favour to quickly sneak up on its prey, for he strikes fast, way before his presence is even realised by his unlucky victim 🐍

Being a naturalist has given me the privilege of meeting and getting to know people from all across the world. We tend to create a special bond with a few over the short period of time we get to spend with them. The experience of seeing an animal in the wild is always a thrilling and memorable moment and being able to give this precious experience to a guest is just one of the special perks of my job.

This is the story of Roy, an 83 year old guy, who for the first time ever, ventured out of the UK, and came to visit us at Bandhavgarh for a very special reason. His wife had a special love for tigers and always donated towards causes that helped in their conservation. Unfortunately she passed away before she could fulfil her last wish of seeing a tiger in the wild. Her sweet husband took it upon himself to honour his late wife's wish and travelled all the way to India, the first time ever he had left his country. He was part of a big group, and it was maybe their bad luck that they were unable to see a tiger properly despite going on 12 safaris, except for a slight glimpse on 2 occasions. Roy was upset as he was unable to take pictures and he clearly seemed dejected. I had interacted with this gentleman on multiple occasions and he told me his story and even showed me a picture of his wife. And that is when I took it upon myself that I will make sure that he gets to see a tiger, come what may.

On our last safari, the stakes were high and the pressure was on. e unfortunately didn't spot any tigers initially, but things took a turn for the good towards the end. We were informed that there was a tigress nearby sitting near a watering hole. As this was near the end of the safari, and the sun was setting, we were losing light, but I was determined to find this tigress, only for Roy. We waited for her to emerge, however she was still really far for an 83 year old man to even spot her, let alone be able to capture pictures properly. It was at this point that I decided to take a gamble and drove back to a nearby watering hole near the road, just hoping she would make an appearance there. And lo and behold, she did! She put on a show for us and sat down and this is when I clicked this shot, and so did Roy. And boy was he happy! We had to quickly make our exit right after, as the park was about to close. As soon as we got out of the gate, he got out of the vehicle and tearfully gave me a hug, profusely thanking me for this overwhelming yet magical experience. Till date for this reason alone, this remains one of my most fulfilling safaris.

" The Ultimate Mother"

This is the story of the Backwater female of Kabini. Born to her were a litter of three that followed her everywhere as they were dependant on her for their survival, just like all young cubs are. But alas, she was impregnated by a new male who made his arrival in the area. She soon gave birth to a new litter of three cubs, the very ones pictured above. The forest steadily spurs new life, and with this comes new challenges. Given that this new litter was younger and far more vulnerable, the mother had to make the tough decision of abandoning her previous litter, although they had not matured yet to independent young adults. This left the mother in a situation where she was constantly on the move with her little ones, to hide from her very own helpless children, who were desperately on the look for her. This may seem confusing or unfair, but the forest runs on a very delicate system and the beauty of it lies in its complexity of relationships. All we can do is hope that all her cubs survive πŸ…

What a memorable sighting this was. It was a cold winter morning in Ranthambore. We had gone 4 safaris without a sighting and that morning the jungle was quiet. Suddenly our driver spotted a Tiger on the road ahead. As we rushed to get a closer look, the Tiger moved deeper into the vegetation and eventually disappeared. We were upset as we merely got a glimpse of her and were not able to get any pictures. We waited by the stream below hoping she or one of her 2 brothers would show up eventually. This was a family of 4 Tigers and were we hopeful we'd see at least 1.

We waited for about half an hour and there was no sign of any Tigers around. A couple of jeeps pulled up next to us and joined the wait. As always is the case the people in the jeep nearby started talking and making a lot of noise. In all this commotion I heard a sambar deer alarm call. I asked the noisy tourists to keep it down but no one seemed to listen. I got annoyed and looked over my shoulder and suddenly saw the tail of a Tiger as it dashed up the hill. I quickly asked our driver to go up the opposite hill hoping he would climb all the way to the top. We waited patiently, as our eyes scanned the hill top from nearly 900m away. About 5 minutes into our search I saw movement behind a tree.

There he was!!!! Finally. A young male Tiger patrolling his territory. We were so far away from him but this added to the charm. I had never seen a Tiger walking on the top of a hill!!! My camera lens was at full zoom and I was happy getting pictures of him in his habitat. I hope this picture gives you a rough idea of what we witnessed.
