Kanwar Yatra and Its Importance:

Kanwar Yatra is one of the largest annual Hindu pilgrimages in India. During the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), millions of devotees of Lord Shiva, known as Kanwariyas, travel on foot to collect sacred water from the River Ganga at places such as Har Ki Pauri, Gangotri, Gaumukh, and Sultanganj. They carry the water in a decorated bamboo pole called a Kanwar and offer it to a Shiva Lingam in their local temples.

Why is Kanwar Yatra important?

It is an act of deep devotion to Lord Shiva.
It symbolizes faith, discipline, sacrifice, and spiritual purification.
Many devotees walk barefoot, observing fasting, celibacy, and prayer throughout the journey.
Offering holy Ganga water to Lord Shiva is believed to bring blessings, peace, good health, and prosperity.

The pilgrimage promotes unity and community service, with thousands of volunteers setting up free food stalls, medical camps, and resting places for pilgrims.

It is one of the largest peaceful religious gatherings in the world, attracting millions of participants every year.

Interesting fact

According to Hindu tradition, the Kanwar Yatra is linked to the legend of the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean). When Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison Halahala to save the universe, devotees offered sacred Ganga water to cool him. This tradition continues today through the Kanwar Yatra.
Greeting often used during the yatra:
"Bol Bam!" or "Har Har Mahadev!"
