🚂 Kalka–Shimla Railway – The Toy Train Story
📜 A Journey Through History
The Kalka–Shimla Toy Train is one of India’s most beautiful and historic railway journeys. It was built during the British rule in India.
🏗 Construction started in 1898
🚆 Opened for public on 9 November 1903
📏 Length: 96 km
🏔 Connects Kalka (Haryana) to Shimla (Himachal Pradesh)
At that time, Shimla was the summer capital of British India. The British officers needed an easy way to travel from the hot plains to the cool hills, so this narrow-gauge railway was built.
🏔 Engineering Wonder
This railway is famous for its amazing construction:
🚇 102 tunnels (originally 103)
🌉 800+ bridges
🔄 Around 900 curves
⛰ Climbs from 656 meters to 2,076 meters
One of the longest tunnels is the Barog Tunnel, which has an interesting story. The British engineer Colonel Barog made a mistake while digging the tunnel from both ends. Because of the miscalculation, the tunnel didn’t meet properly. Later, the tunnel was rebuilt correctly and named after him.
🌍 World Heritage Status
In 2008, the Kalka–Shimla Railway was declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site
as part of the “Mountain Railways of India.”
❄️ Magical Experience
The toy train journey takes about 5–6 hours and passes through:
Pine forests 🌲
Deep valleys
Small hill stations
Snow-covered landscapes in winter ❄️
The slow speed makes the journey relaxing and scenic. Many Bollywood movies have also been filmed on this route.
