Have you ever gone cruising in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven't, make sure you do. This is easily one amongst the most remarkable and unique experiences that our state has to offer.

Present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. The original Kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices. A standard Kettuvallam can hold up to 30 tons of goods from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

In Malayalam language Kettu refers to ‘dwelling structures’ ‘Vallam’ means boat. These are boats with a thatched roof cover over wooden hulls. The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a Kettuvallam can last for generations.

A portion of the Kettuvallam was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals were cooked onboard and supplemented with freshly cooked fish from the backwaters.

When modern trucks replaced this system of transport, people came up with a new way that would keep these boats, almost all of which were more than 100 years old, in the market. By constructing special rooms to accommodate travellers, these boats cruised forward from near-extinction to enjoy their present popularity.

Today these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alappuzha alone, there are as many as 500 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the areca nut tree are used for roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and wood of coconut trees and coir for beds. Nowadays, Solar panels are preferred for lighting.

Today, the houseboats boast of the same comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm leaves open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine. Boat-trains - formed by joining two or more houseboats together are also used by large groups of sightseers.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float in a relaxed way right through it.(kerala tourism)

Airlines have now been allowed to operate 70 per cent of pre-Covid domestic flight levels from November 11, 2020, a rise of 10 per cent from the existing 60 per cent capacity.

A circular from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), signed by Satyendra Kumar Mishra, Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, reads, “After review of the current status of Scheduled Domestic Operations viz-a-viz passenger demands for air travel in terms of purpose specified in the initial order Order No. 01/2020 dated 21.05.2020, condition laid down in para 2 of the order dated 21.05.2020 as modified vide Order No. 06/2020 dated 02.09.2020, is modified as under: 60 per cent capacity may be read as 70 per cent capacity.”

Soon after the announcement, Union Civil Aviation Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri had also tweeted, “Domestic operations re-commenced with 30K passengers on 25 May and have reached 2.06 lakhs on 8 Nov 2020. MoCA is now allowing domestic carriers to increase their operations from existing 60 per cent to 70 per cent of the pre-Covid approved capacity.”

Earlier, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had hinted at an increase in the number of flights, just a week after Puri had announced that the capacity for domestic flights would be capped at 60 per cent till February 24, 2021, and had tweeted, “ With festival season around the corner, the passenger traffic is expected to go up and as the passenger traffic increases, the upper cap on domestic civil aviation operations would be revised to 70-75 per cent of pre-Covid capacity.”

Kerala Tourism has been bestowed the coveted 'Highly Commended' Award by World Travel Mart London, as a recognition for its remarkable activities aimed at promoting Responsible Tourism amid pandemic.

Kerala has been bestowed the coveted 'Highly Commended' Award by World Travel Mart London, as a recognition for its remarkable activities aimed at promoting Responsible Tourism (RT) during the challenging times of COVID-19 pandemic.

Kerala's Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission received this recognition in the category of 'Meaningful Connections.'

The RT Mission received the award for its innovative work on 'Wok at Home Videos' and storytelling audio and video series produced and presented by various Mission units in the state during the pandemic that has posed multiple challenges to the tourism sector, an official statement said here on Friday.

The Work at Home Videos have been developed by RT Mission entrepreneurs with a message to stay home safely during the lockdown but not to despair and to adopt measures to effectively prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

The videos also make an impassioned appeal to tourists visiting Kerala to see their activities as soon as the pandemic-triggered issues are brought under control.

"The award proves that the RT Mission is becoming a driving force in sharing innovative ideas and ensuring public participation in the tourism sector," Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said.

Tourism Secretary Rani George said the Mission has played a significant role in the tourism sector during the pandemic.

"This is a morale-boosting recognition that celebrates the best-in-class of the global travel and tourism industry," she added.

Tourism Director P Bala Kiran congratulated all the RT Mission unit members in Kerala for this achievement and sustainable tourism activities in the most adverse circumstances.

The RT Mission had instructed the members of various units to wash their hands with sanitizer or soap and start their work.

They were presented as a video document to engage them during the lockdown period.

Besides becoming a marketing tool, it also became an instant hit in national and international platforms.

This was followed by storytelling audios about each area and its festivals, followed by the videos on various traditional musical instruments and other folk art forms.

State RT Mission Coordinator K Rupeshkumar said the Mission received a total of 1,048 audios and videos, all of which were produced and edited by the unit members.

These were viewed by thousands of people through various social media platforms.

During World Folklore Day, these videos were aired at the 'Folkkathone' programme for 90 minutes.

"The uniqueness of this recognition is that the RT Mission units are proving that life-affirming activities need to be presented live without exaggeration to be evaluated and recognised by the world," he added.

The award jury said it was the most popular intervention in the world to give confidence to entrepreneurs and tourists who are reeling from the epidemic.

"The move sends a message that any crisis can be overcome by working with one mind," it noted.

This is the 5th International Award for the Responsible Tourism Mission since its formation in 2017.

The Mission has also won three National Awards.

There are currently 20,017 units operating in Kerala under the RT Mission with more than one lakh beneficiaries as part of its activities.

The units under the mission earned revenue of Rs 35 crore in three years.

One of its salient features is that 80 per cent of the total units are headed by women.

The Mission, which also runs 140 experiential tour packages, has so far imparted training to 7,000 people.

Also, 48 new tourism destinations have sprung up through the Mission's flagship projects Pepper and Model RT Village, the statement added.
