Onam Festival is celebrated in the beginning of the first month of Malayalam Calendar called Chingam which corresponds to August-September in Gregorian Calendar.

THIRU ONAM

Onam celebrations continues for ten days starting from Atham and culminating on Thiru Onam. Atham and Thiru Onam are the most important days for Onam festivities.Atham is regarded as auspicious and holy day by people of Kerala. Thiru Onam corresponds to the Shravan day in the month of August or September, hence it is also called Sravanotsavam.

ONAM - MYTHOLOGY

People believe that it was this particular day in the month of Chingam when Lord Vishnu took his fifth avatar as Vaamana, appeared in the kingdom of King Mahabali and sent him to nether world.And they believe that the day of Tiruonam, the spirit of King Maveli visits Kerala, hence the day is marked by feast and festivities. Devotees of Maveli celebrate the golden era witnessed in Maveli's reign during Onam. To welcome their revered ruler, people Pookalam in the front courtyard, prepare Onasadya, dance, play and make merry. All this is done to impress upon King Mahabali that his people are prosperous and happy.

Harvest Time

As it is a harvest season, the beautiful state of Kerala can be seen in its magnificent best. Weather is pleasantly sunny and warm calling for mirth and celebrations. Fields look brilliant as they glow with golden paddy grains. It is also the boom time of fruits and flowers. After the month of deprivation, Karkidakam (last month of Malayalam Calendar), farmers are happy with a bountiful harvest and celebrate the festival to the hilt.

Kochi Metro trail between JLN stadium and Maharaja's college begins on Friday:KOCHI: The Kochi Metro will begin to move out of JLN station towards Maharaja's College stadium from Friday. The trail which begins at 10.30 am will go on for the next few days.

"Initially the train will move at a very slow speed and then it will slowly gain momentum. The trail run will be conducted using one train," said KMRL spokesperson. She also said that as signalling works were progressing and hence the signalling systems would not be tested.

The metro agency also said the train will be brought to JLN station during the wee hours of Friday. As commercial operations are being carried out between Palarivattom and Aluva, it wouldn't be possible to conduct the trial linking Palarivattom station.

KOCHI METRO: According to reports the first ride of Kochi Metro for the public would be on June 19. Hon.Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel in the metro after inaugurating it on June 17 on Saturday and Sunday, the service will be conducted solely for disabled persons.
