Wishing all Keralites a Happy Ramayana Month

According to the Hindu calendar the month of Karkitakam starts by mid of July. This is the first month of Dakshinayanam which lasts for six months. In Kerala, this is the time of heavy monsoon showers. People are more confined to their houses during this rainy season.

In Ramayana month, people read the Ramayanam with utmost devotion in the evenings in-front of oil lamp (Nilavilakku) which represents guru or god. The parayanam will be audible enough so that the other family members can also listen the story. The whole story is read taking one month time every day covering few pages

Though the practice of reciting Ramayanam on special religious occasions has been prevalent for nearly 500 years, households observing Karkidakam as a holy month (‘Ramayana maasom’ or Ramayana month) has a history of hardly 37 years. The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of Swami Chinmayananda, Swami Visweswara Theertha, seers; Karan Singh, regarded as a cultural ambassador; and Rajendra Singh, former RSS chief, in Ernakulam in 1982

India Post issued a set of 11 commemorative postage stamps on "RAMAYANA" on 22.09.2017- 10 stamps are of denominations Rs5 and 1 stamp is of denomination Rs15
