The Sekrenyi Festival, held on February 25, 2025, by the Angami Naga tribe, was a vibrant celebration of purification and renewal. It began with the “Kizie” ritual, where villagers collected sacred water for cleansing. On the second day, men bathed in the village stream, symbolizing deeper purification, followed by prayers and offerings to ancestral spirits. These were the activities during the forefathers era.

A grand feast united the community, with traditional dishes and rice beer shared among families. The festival also featured wrestling, traditional games, dances, and folk songs around a bonfire, celebrating unity, culture, and the start of a new year.

Sibsagar, also known as Sivasagar, is a historically significant town in the northeastern state of Assam, India. It was once the capital of the powerful Ahom Kingdom, which ruled Assam for nearly 600 years. The town derives its name from the vast artificial tank called Sibsagar (or Borpukhuri), which was built by Queen Ambika, wife of Ahom king Shiva Singha, in the 18th century. This tank, covering an area of over 130 acres, is a popular attraction, with temples and historical monuments surrounding it.

One of the main highlights of Sibsagar is the Shiva Dol, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in 1734 by Queen Ambika, the temple stands tall with its 104 feet height, making it one of the tallest Shiva temples in India. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings, and during the annual Maha Shivaratri festival, it becomes a hub of devotion, drawing pilgrims from across the region. Alongside the Shiva Dol, two other temples, Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol, also add to the town’s rich religious and cultural heritage.

Sibsagar is not just about temples; it is also home to the iconic Rang Ghar, often referred to as the “Colosseum of the East.” Built during the reign of King Pramatta Singha, this amphitheater was used by the Ahom royalty to watch traditional sports and games. Another significant site is the Talatal Ghar, a multi-storied palace with an intriguing underground network of secret tunnels and passageways, reflecting the architectural brilliance of the Ahoms. These sites, combined with the serene surroundings, make Sibsagar a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and travelers interested in the rich legacy of Assam.
