Today, Bali celebrates the holy day of ‘Saniscara Kliwon Wuku Landep’ (second Saturday of 30 based Balinese calendar system) which occurs every 210 days, called Tumpek Landep. On this day people make offerings and pray to God for tools made out of metals and especially the Keris (dagger) – which was a commonly used weapon in battles and regarded as a holy spiritual object possessing magical powers. It is a symbol and a metaphor which instructs you to be as sharp as possible in your thinking. People pray for their safety from Ida Sang Hyang Pasupati, the manifestation of God as the creator and owner of all tools made of metal.

The day is also for the cleansing and purifying of heirlooms. For artists, it is a day of worshipping the taksu (the aura of inner power that is felt in work of art) for their growth and progress and to be able to deliver moral messages through their art.

Today, Hindus in Bali often place offerings on their vehicles including bicycles, motorcycles and cars for safety on roads. Cars and motorcycles are decorated with offerings made from young coconut leaves out of respect for the metal used for the vehicles that transport humans on earth. Farmers placing offerings for sickles, hoes, tractors, ploughs and metal objects that support their livelihoods. The Balinese people believe that these ceremonies and blessings will bring them luck and keep them safe.

Tumpek Landep has further been linked to the human mind by Hindu religious leaders of Bali; tied to how people’s minds and thought processes should be continuously sharpened to gain as much knowledge as possible during life. They believe that it results in the ability to control our desires to avoid committing inappropriate behaviour. It is also linked with the Saraswati day of Bali, where Balinese Hindus worship the goddess of knowledge. Tumpek Landep is thus the day to sharpen the knowledge gained from the goddess Saraswati.

Apsaras, celestial nymphs descended to Earth that leave in their thrall gods and kings with their proverbially divine dance. Legend says the beautiful beings were born from the churning of the Ocean of Milk, also referred to as the 'Samudra Manthan' in Hindi or 'Ko Samut Teuk Dos' in Khmer. The story is depicted on a 49-metre bas-relief, carved on the walls of Angkor Wat.

Apsaras represent an important motif in the stone bas-reliefs of the Angkorian temples in Cambodia. In Angkor Wat temple alone, there are around 1,800 Apsara carvings at every level of the temple starting from the pavilion at the entrance right up to the high towers situated at the centre. Studies of these celestial beings have shown that there are varied depictions with remarkable diversity of hair, jewellery, clothing, stance, floral decorations and head-dresses which suggests that they were modelled on real courtesans in the Khmer court of the 12th century.

Fortunately, one doesn’t have to be a god or a king to behold the dancing Apsaras. You can simply witness them on your next visit to the mystical Angkor Archaeological Park in the temple city of Siem Reap!

The Bayon is the most recently built of the temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Interestingly, unlike the other temples around that were originally Hindu temples, this structure was a tribute to the Buddha by the greatest of Khmer kings, Jayavarman VII, who had converted to Mahayana Buddhism. It is notable for its 216 distinctive, intricately carved faces of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshwara which smile and watch its visitors from its 54 towers. One of the most beautifully carved set of bas-reliefs showcases a naval battle between the Khmer and the Chams, the people of the ancient Champa (roughly today’s Vietnam), as well as the everyday lives of the citizens.

This marvellous temple was originally called Jayagiri, which means ‘victory mountain’ but under French colonial rule it was changed to Banyan, largely due to the Buddhist artwork present inside it, since Gautama is said to have found enlightenment under a banyan tree. However, when the temple was being renovated, Banyan was mispronounced as Bayon, and the name stuck.

Though the temple appears rather lacklustre from a distance, one cannot help but be awed by its majesty once you step inside, especially when you get to the third level of the temple.

With the temples of Angkor to the west, the beaches of the southern coast and the ethnic minorities of the North-eastern provinces - Phnom Penh (ភ្នំពេញ) – situated at the confluence of the Basăk (Bassac), Sab, and Mekong river systems, in the south-central part of the country – is a vibrant bustling capital of Cambodia. Formerly known as ‘Krong Chatkomuk Serimongkul,’ literally translating to ‘City of Brahma’s Faces,’ Phnom Penh has a magnetic charm in its frenzied muddle, with dense streets of Chinese shophouses jostling for position with crumbling French mansions, and heroic 1960s experiments in the New Khmer architecture of post-independence Cambodia from the French colonial rule.

Once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’, Phnom Penh’s shine was tarnished by the impact of war and revolution. But the city has since risen from the ashes to take its place among the hip capitals of the region, with an alluring cafe culture, bustling bars and a world-class dining scene. The glimmering spires of the Royal Palace, the fluttering saffron of the monks’ robes and the luscious location on the banks of the mighty Mekong – this is the Asia many day dream about from afar.

A mixture of Asian exotica, the famous Cambodian hospitality awaits the visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia!

The sleepy town of Kampot isn’t trying be anything it’s not. Naturally beautiful and effortlessly enchanting, it makes you slip into the right balance of laid-back days on the river and scenic drives over red dirt roads. Relatively untouched by tourism, its natural beauty puts you on the fast-track to getting back in touch with Mother Earth with rock climbing river tours, and expeditions into the jungle.

Kampot also has a rich history as it served as the capital under the French rule. Today, travellers can hop on a motorbike or hire a car and explore handfuls of abandoned French colonial mansions and churches reminiscent of Indiana-Jones style voyages. All in all, Kampot is unlike any other Cambodian city you’ll find.

If you like blending natural adventures with historical discoveries, don’t skip over this hidden gem of a city!
