जब चंबा और कुल्लू में सड़कों की कमी थी तो नदी से इस तरह लकड़ी को गंतव्य तक पहुंचाया जाता था। लकड़ी को एक के बाद एक करके नदी के जल प्रवाह के साथ छोड़ा जाता था। जहां नदी का प्रवाह कम होता या नदी फैली होती तो वहां लकड़ी का डक (ढेर) बन जाता था। इस प्रक्रिया को घाल कहते थे और लकड़ी प्रवाहित करने वाले व्यक्तियों को घालू कहते थे।

यह तस्वीर 1971 की है जो कुल्लू शहर के समीप की है। उस समय लगघाटी से इसी प्रकिया से कुल्लू शहर तक ईमारती लकड़ी पहुंचाई जाती थी।
