The only Brahma temple in the world is present at Pushkar. Though the Lord has a temple, he himself is not worshipped. The legend goes that Lord Brahma, desperate to perform a Holy Yajnya (Fire-Worship) at Pushkar decided to marry a local girl since wife Savitri was not ready to come to Mrutyulok (Earth). However, Savitri decided to check in on the erring husband and found him sitting alongside his new bride. Enraged Savitri cursed Brahma that he would loose the right to be worshipped anywhere else other than Pushkar and hence the only temple dedicated to this Lord of the Lords.

The temple is magnificently rebuilt in 1809. Make it a point to identify the four-faced icon of Brahma accompanied by his reticent bride, Gayatri. The turtle (pure silver) at the shrine's entrance also deserves a closer look. The entrance is marked by a maroon spire and atop the gateway a Hans (goose) is seen perched.

One of the holiest sites in India, Pushkar is a laid back town surrounded by hills on three sides on the desert border. Also known as the ‘city of temples’, Pushkar is one of the oldest Indian cities housing over 400 ancient temples. A tour to Rajasthan cannot be completed without visiting the famed and legendary temples, especially those of Pushkar. Apart from the various shrines that Pushkar boasts of, the Brahma Temple is the special attraction since it is the only temple in India dedicated to Lord Brahma. The somewhat somnolent town of Pushkar reverberates in enthusiasm and liveliness with hectic activities during fairs and festivals, the most prominent being the Pushkar Camel Fair. Check out the various temples of Pushkar that will surely hold you back herein.

Pushkar Religious Pilgrimage Temples

Brahma Temple
An important pilgrim centre for the Hindus, the Brahma Temple is nestled in the Pushkar valley, which lies beyond the Nagaparvat and Anasagar Lake. This place, filled with natural picturesque beauty, holds a special place in the hearts of the Indians. It is believed that Lord Brahma, together with all the gods and goddesses, performed a Yagya here. Legend also has it that the ancient Lake Sarovar had appeared miraculously, when a lotus fell from the hands of Lord Brahma and dropped into this valley. Brahma Temple is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma (the creator of the universe according to Hindu mythology) in the entire country. You can identify it from far, by its red spire and the image of a hans (the goose considered sacred to Lord Brahma). Built in marble, the temple is decorated with silver coins and reveals a silver turtle on its floor.

Savitri Temple
Dedicated to Lord Brahma's first wife, Goddess Savitri, this temple is situated on a hillock right behind the Brahma temple. While climbing the long series of steps leading to the temple, one can catch the panoramic view of the lake and surrounding temples and sand dunes. The presence of the only Brahma Temple in Pushkar is the outcome of Savitri’s curse to Brahma on marrying another Goddess, Gayatri, while starting his yagna in Pushkar.

Rangji Temple
The gracious and conspicuous Rangji Temple is another popular shrine that witnesses thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rangji, believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The influence of South Indian style, Rajput style and Mughal style in the temple’s architecture is highly noticeable and eye-catching. The high rising ‘Gopuram’ prevalent mainly in the temples present in South India is another feature of the temple that attracts visitors.

Warah Temple
The Warah Temple houses the image of Lord Vishnu in the fifth incarnation of a wild boar. Constructed by King Anaji Chauhan (1123-1150), this temple is considered equally significant as the most popular Brahma temple. According to mythology, it is believed that Vishnu came to earth in the form of a wild boar to kill the demon Hirnayaksh and liberate the land from his atrocities.

Apteshwar Temple
This 12th century Apteshwar Temple is another important shrine visited by numerous devotees round the year. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has been artistically and splendidly constructed. Apparently the oldest and most revered Indian God, Lord Shiva is believed to have come down to this temple and bless his devotees heartily.

Pushkar Lake :
A sacred lake of the Hindus, Pushkar Lake is of the five most sacred pilgrimage destinations for the Hindus in India. It is believed that when the lotus petals fell from the hands of the Hindu God of Creation, Lord Brahma, the Pushkar Lake was created. This tranquil lake is located in the town of Pushkar in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. According to the Hindu scriptures, the sacred lake of Pushkar is described as "Tirtha Raj” or the king of all pilgrimage sites related to a water body. No pilgrimage is said to be complete unless one takes a holy dip here. And if the ritual is performed on Kartik Purnima, it is thought to be equivalent to performing yagnas for several hundred years.

The Hindu scriptures also explicitly states the fact that apart from bathing in the ghat, performing a parikrama or circumambulation of the three lakes, the main Pushkar, Madya Pushkar and Kanistha Pushkar, which cover a distance of 16 kms, on the day of Kartik Poornima would be highly auspicious for the devotees. The Pushkar Lake is semi-circular in shape and about 8-10 meters deep. With 52 bathing ghats and over 400 temples around the lake precincts, this sacred lake is thronged by thousands of devotees visiting this town during the Pushkar Fair, held in the months of October-November.

There are ten important ghats surrounding the Pushkar Lake, which have been declared as "Monuments of National Importance”. These ghats are the Varaha Ghat, Dadhich Ghat, Saptarishi Ghat, Gwalior Ghat, Kota Ghat, Gau Ghat, Yag Ghat, Jaipur Ghat, Karni Ghat and Gangaur Ghat. The sacred lake of Pushkar, along with these ghats, has been under the protection of the royal families of Rajasthan. Even the Maratha kings have made a lot of effort in refurbishing them from time to time. While most of the ghats are named after the Kings or Rajas, the others have special importance attached to them.

The Varaha Ghat is named after Lord Vishnu's incarnated form of a boar, while Brahma Ghat is so called because Lord Brahma is believed to have bathed here. The Gau Ghat has been renamed as Gandhi Ghat, after the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was immersed here. The Nart Singh Ghat located near the Varaha Ghat displays a stuffed crocodile. The water surrounding each ghat is also said to possess special curative powers. While the Naga Kund is thought to bestow fertility, Roop Tirth gives the person taking a dip beauty and charm. Kapil Vyapi Kund is said to cure the person of leprosy, while the one who takes a dip in the Mrikand Muni Kund is ensured of wisdom.
