Who’s planning a fall road trip in Iceland? 🍁🚗🇮🇸🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼
Fall here is short and sweet; it starts in September, and by late October, winter’s already knocking. But that little window might just be one of the best times to explore Iceland by car, if you know how to prepare.
Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the road this season 👇🏼
📱 Apps to Download:
SafeTravel keeps you updated on alerts and road conditions.
Parka and EasyPark help you pay for parking.
And for emergencies, don’t forget the 112 app.
🌦️ Weather & Roads:
Weather changes fast here, and even faster as winter nears.
Check vedur.is, the Icelandic Met Office, for the most reliable forecast.
Fall is also aurora season, so keep an eye on the forecast through an aurora app or on vedur.is too.
For road conditions, road.is gives you the full picture, or use SafeTravel for a quicker overview.
🚙 Tires & Vehicle:
We recommend a 4x4 for your fall or winter adventure here; it makes for a smoother, more comfortable ride no matter the conditions.
Come October, we switch to winter or studded tires so you can drive safely even on icy roads.
🕐 Pace Yourself:
A mistake we see a lot with first-time visitors is packing the itinerary too tight.
With daylight fading fast, you don’t want to rush from site to site, especially when road conditions call for careful driving.
Leave room actually to enjoy your trip, not just tick boxes.
