Who’s planning a fall road trip in Iceland? 🍁🚗🇮🇸🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼

Fall here is short and sweet; it starts in September, and by late October, winter’s already knocking. But that little window might just be one of the best times to explore Iceland by car, if you know how to prepare.

Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the road this season 👇🏼

📱 Apps to Download:
SafeTravel keeps you updated on alerts and road conditions.
Parka and EasyPark help you pay for parking.
And for emergencies, don’t forget the 112 app.

🌦️ Weather & Roads:
Weather changes fast here, and even faster as winter nears.
Check vedur.is, the Icelandic Met Office, for the most reliable forecast.
Fall is also aurora season, so keep an eye on the forecast through an aurora app or on vedur.is too.
For road conditions, road.is gives you the full picture, or use SafeTravel for a quicker overview.

🚙 Tires & Vehicle:
We recommend a 4x4 for your fall or winter adventure here; it makes for a smoother, more comfortable ride no matter the conditions.
Come October, we switch to winter or studded tires so you can drive safely even on icy roads.

🕐 Pace Yourself:
A mistake we see a lot with first-time visitors is packing the itinerary too tight.
With daylight fading fast, you don’t want to rush from site to site, especially when road conditions call for careful driving.
Leave room actually to enjoy your trip, not just tick boxes.

Who’s planning a road trip in Iceland this September? 🚗🍂

Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the road 👇🏼

🌞 Daylight:
You’ll have 11-14 hours of daylight in September, plenty of time for sightseeing, and the nights are dark enough for a good shot at the Northern Lights too.

🌡️ Weather:
Expect temperatures around 6-12°C (43-54°F), with rainy, sunny, and windy days, sometimes all within the same afternoon.

🛣️ Road Conditions:
The paved main roads are in good condition in September. Gravel roads may be a bit bumpy, and the Highland F-roads start to close from mid-September onwards. Always check road.is before heading off the beaten path.

🚙 Car Type:
A Ring Road adventure is still doable in a small car in September, as long as you stick to the main roads. If you want to explore further off the beaten path, we recommend a 4x4, since gravel roads can be bumpy even when they’re not technically F-roads.

🗺️ Where to Go:
You can visit pretty much all of Iceland in September, up until the Highlands start closing around mid-September. Some of our favorite September road trips from Reykjavík:
⭐ The Ring Road (10+ days)
⭐ The Westfjords (6+ days)
⭐ South/Southeast Iceland (5+ days)
⭐ West Iceland and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula (2+ days)
⭐ The Reykjanes Peninsula (1 day)

🧳 Packing:
Layers are key when packing for an Iceland adventure! Bring a water- and windproof top layer, a lightweight woolen base layer, mid-layers of wool or fleece, thick woolen socks, a beanie, a neck gaiter, and waterproof hiking boots. Bring two pairs of gloves; they always get wet! Don’t forget a swimsuit, sunglasses for driving, and a casual outfit for Reykjavík.

⚠️ Safety First:
Stay up to date with the weather forecast at vedur.is. Check road conditions at road.is, plus safetravel.is for other safety updates on hiking trails and more.

Have an amazing adventure! 💜

Do you need an SUV in Iceland? 🚙🤷‍♀️

It depends on where you’re headed 🗺️

🛣️ Ring Road during summertime & Reykjavík: Paved and well-maintained, so a regular car works fine here.

☃️ Gravel Roads & Winter adventures: An SUV or 4x4 is recommended if you’re heading off the main road or driving in snowy, icy conditions.

🧐 Not sure what you’re driving on? Check road.is to see which roads are paved, gravel, or trail only.

🏔️ F-Roads & Highlands: A 4x4 is required. These roads are rough, unpaved, and not suitable for standard cars.

🙅‍♀️ Heads up: insurance never covers river crossings, and driving an unmarked rental on F-roads voids your coverage entirely.

That means you’d be on the hook for any undercarriage or suspension damage.

So if F-roads are part of the plan, book a proper 4x4 from the start.

What’s the perfect car for an Iceland adventure? 🚙🇮🇸

Your ideal rental car comes down to three things:
1️⃣ Number of travelers
2️⃣ Luggage size
3️⃣ Travel plans

Here are some of our most frequently rented car types:
🤏 Small car: If you’re carrying little luggage and plan to stick to the paved main roads during summertime, a small economy car such as a small Hyundai will suffice.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Family car: For family-friendly travel all year round and flexible travel plans, you need a car with more space and 4-wheel drive capability in case you choose to explore a little off the beaten path.

🏔️ Highlands: For reaching more remote sites and hiking areas in the Highlands during summertime, you’ll need a 4x4 vehicle.

✨ Luxury: For comfort and style all year round, choose a premium car such as a Toyota Land Cruiser or a Land Rover that can handle almost any road in Iceland.

Got everything you need to rent a car in Iceland? 🇮🇸🚗

Quick checklist for you 👇

1️⃣ Valid driver’s license, held for at least a year. It needs to be in the Roman alphabet so the rental supplier can actually read it. If yours is in a different alphabet, like Arabic or Hanzi, bring an International Driving Permit too.

2️⃣ A credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit. Most places take debit cards too, but credit is the smarter choice since preauthorization refunds tend to process faster than on debit.

3️⃣ Age requirements: 20+ for a standard car, 23+ for a 4x4. This is the general rule across most Icelandic rental companies, but it can shift a bit by supplier, and some charge a young driver’s fee on top.

Hope that clears things up! Drop any questions in the comments 💬

The total solar eclipse is coming, and half of Iceland will be driving somewhere to see it! 🌞🌚🚗

Here's how to make sure your drive out to see it won’t be a stressful mess 😅👇🏼

🗺️ Before You Go:
Pick your main viewing spot ahead of time, plus a realistic backup nearby.

🛣️ On The Road:
Expect heavy traffic across western Iceland, follow any temporary restrictions, and build in extra travel time.

🅿️ Parking:
Only stop in designated areas or legal rest spots, never on the side of the road.

⏳ After Totality:
Wait a little before heading out again. Everyone leaves at once.
