Watch out for unusual pool guests!

On a quiet morning in Seltjarnarnes, (a suburb of the capital Reykjavík), the local swimming pool staff were greeted not by early swimmers as usual, but by a confident swan doing her elegant laps in the 25-meter pool. Used to a larger body of water, she seemed to have some trouble taking off again but acted, in the meantime, as if she had paid for premium and private access to the pool. Despite a bumpy landing, she quickly discovered the joy of warm geothermal water and began gliding around like she owned the place. Anyone who swam too close got a stern swan-glare that said, This is my pool now.

“We’ve just decided she can have the pool for now,” the pool warden admitted. “I’m waiting to hear from the Food and Veterinary Authority.”

And so the morning ended with a perfectly peaceful scene: no humans in the pool—only one very relaxed, very determined swan enjoying her unexpected spa day. Let’s hope she doesn’t demand a massage or a pedicure afterward!

Gestir í Sundlaug Seltjarnarness ráku upp stór augu fyrir hádegi í dag þegar álft lenti í lauginni. Gesturinn hvíti virkaði særður og ekkert fararsnið á honum.

Today, our all-female office will be closed as we take part in the Women’s Strike 2025.

On Friday, October 24, 2025, women and non-binary people across Iceland are encouraged to stop both paid and unpaid work for the entire day—just as women did in 1975.

The backlash against gender equality is real: reports of
gender-based violence, even in Iceland, are increasing; the gender pay gap is widening; inequality in the division of labour at home persists; and movements that foster hostility toward women, LGBTQ+ people, and foreigners are gaining ground.

We take a clear stand on these issues. Iceland has long been a role model for women’s rights, and we will not back down or give way to any backlash against gender equality or hostilities towards minorities.

At Exploring Iceland, we are aware that, despite the challenges women face here, we remain in a privileged position compared to women in many other parts of the world, especially in developing countries. We will therefore take this opportunity to reflect on how we can support women in places where their voices cannot yet be heard.

With kind regards,
The Staff of Exploring Iceland

This August we had 2 great groups on our Riding the Rift Valley tour. A 4 day tour where we ride through Þingvellir national park, along lava fields, between tectonic plates and explore the Golden Circle. Each day has a different scenery and riding trail.
