🇸🇪Exploring Stockholm

Our flight landed early, and we wasted no time sailing through passport control and hopping on the Arlanda Express—the fast and efficient train into central Stockholm. Our hotel, the Radisson Blu Waterfront, was just a stone’s throw from the station, and we were delighted to be offered an early check-in.

After dumping our bags, we set off on foot for Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s historic old town, about a 15-minute walk away. We found the main square and stopped for lunch, enjoying some classic Swedish meatballs that were absolutely delicious.

Next came a wander through the Christmas market, which was charming and full of unique Swedish items. We picked up some local cheese before starting a GPS My City walking tour of the old town. The cobbled streets, narrow alleys, and colourful buildings were utterly enchanting—so atmospheric and full of character. We paused for a beer in a cosy historic pub before retreating to the hotel for a nap, the early start finally catching up with us.

Revived, we headed back to Gamla Stan for a historic pub crawl. We popped into the cathedral to watch evensong, then crossed over to Kaffegillet, a remarkable historic pub with a stunning 14th-century cellar complete with a secret passage leading to the cathedral. Candlelight, stone arches, and a cold beer made it feel very special. We also sampled a small plate—Lappkata—toast topped with smoked reindeer and horseradish cream. Delicious… sorry, Rudolf!

Our next stop was Movitz Bar, another atmospheric old pub with wooden walls and a great buzz. We enjoyed some bar snacks, including chorizo sausage, before moving on.

From there, we descended into Aifur—a Viking-themed bar hidden in the cellars of Gamla Stan. Warm, lively, and delightfully eccentric, the staff were dressed in Viking attire and drinks were served in clay bowls. Live traditional music added to the medieval feel, and the menu was full of local specialities. We couldn’t resist ordering the meat-sharing board, which included yet more reindeer—and even reindeer heart. Surprisingly (and wonderfully), it was absolutely delicious.

We finished the evening with a gentle walk around the quieter perimeter streets of Gamla Stan, admiring the beautiful architecture before heading back to the hotel for a final Swedish whisky dram.

A brilliant first day exploring Stockholm—an incredible city and a fantastic place to visit.

Our second day trip from Reykjavík was with Bus Travel Iceland through , on the “Golden Circle with Secret Lagoon” tour.

It was an incredible experience, taking us to Kerið Crater, The Secret Lagoon (Iceland’s oldest natural hot spring), the Geysir geothermal area, the breathtaking Gullfoss Waterfall—spectacular amidst the snow and ice, though absolutely savage in temperature!—and Þingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and where Iceland’s parliament was first established in the 900s.

The snowfall caught everyone by surprise but made the day even more magical. Iceland is truly stunning! ❄️🇮🇸

We left Reykjavík before sunrise and set off on an unforgettable day trip organised by along Iceland’s breathtaking South Coast — all the way to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey itself was spectacular: winding mountain passes, dramatic coastal roads, vast lava fields, and glacier “highways” stretching as far as the eye could see.

Driving alongside Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier and the third largest in the northern hemisphere, was awe-inspiring. At Jökulsárlón, we climbed aboard an amphibious boat for a sail among the floating icebergs that have calved from the main glacier outlet — a surreal experience made even cooler knowing this is where scenes from Interstellar, James Bond, and other films were shot.

Our final stop was the magical Diamond Beach, where chunks of glacial ice glitter like scattered diamonds on the black volcanic sand. It was absolutely stunning — and absolutely freezing! It will have been a long day- by the time we make it back to base it will be 15 hours and 500 miles on the road but thankfully we’re being chauffeured in a comfy and warm coach!

🇮🇸 Reykjavik on a Foodie Budget!

Iceland’s known for being pricey, and as foodies who love a local tipple (or three 🍻), we were a little nervous… But with 2 days in Reykjavik, we managed to eat and drink well — without breaking the bank catastrophically. Here’s how 👇

📸 1. – Straight off the plane for unlimited soup refills! 🥣 The lamb soup (served in a bread bowl) was the winner, but Keith sampled the seafood stew & tomato too.

🍞 2. Reykjavík Treasure B&B Breakfast – Fresh bread & cakes, local meats & pâté, cheese, berries & skyr. Absolutely delicious and kept us going for hours.

🌭 3. Hot dogs near Hallgrímskirkja – Famous from Somebody Feed Phil but… a bit “meh” for us.

🍺 4. Basement Taproom Vibes – Cosy bar in a historic house, locals playing board games, and us getting competitive over Jenga.

🍀 5. Irish Bar Happy Hour – Normally we avoid them, but £6 pints in Iceland? Say no more. Tried Icelandic gin too!

⚓️ 6. Old Harbour House – Beers by the boot 🍻 and a cracking view over the boats during happy hour.

🐟 7. Kaffivagnir – Historic harbour spot for fish & chips. Super fresh & generous portions… though £85 for two + a drink each 😱

🍖 8. Round 2 at the hotdog stall – Pulled lamb = redemption! Then over to for the most SENSATIONAL cinnamon roll.

🦞 9. – Lobster soup + redfish skewers = heaven. Also tried fermented shark & Brennivín… an experience 😅

🎉 10 & 11. Birthday Drinks + Dinner .rvk – Icelandic lamb burgers to finish the couple of days off.

💸 We mixed happy hours, street food & local gems to keep things (relatively) affordable — and still got to taste the best of Reykjavik. Would 100% do it again!

🎉 Celebrating my big birthday in Reykjavik! 🇮🇸

The day started with a lovely Icelandic breakfast at our B&B — complete with the Icelandic flag on the table (a Danish tradition from our landlady).

We had a wander around town and enjoyed some great street food (more on that in another post!). The cinnamon roll from was amazing.

Lunch was at , a casual spot by the harbour serving lobster soup and fresh fish skewers. We also tried the fermented shark and Brennivín shot — interesting, but I don’t need to do it again!

In the afternoon we went to for my first sunset of my 40s. Soaking in the warm volcanic water with ocean views and trying the 7-step ritual (including the icy plunge) was such a memorable experience.

We finished the evening with Icelandic lamb burgers and a few drinks — a great end to a really special day.

Day 1 – Reykjavík Adventures 🇮🇸

Our first day in Reykjavík started with a delicious Icelandic breakfast at our hotel before setting out on foot to explore the city. Using the GPS My City app, we followed two walking routes that took us past many of the city’s landmarks and historical buildings.

We absolutely adored Hallgrímskirkja — the striking church that looks like a rocket! Its design was inspired by Iceland’s lava columns, and it’s just stunning in person. We even got to hear the organist play the 15-metre-tall pipe organ (with over 5,000 pipes!) — such an unforgettable sound.

The Harpa Concert Hall was another highlight. Its glass façade sparkles in the changing light, and we were lucky enough to wander inside and catch a peek of an open rehearsal in the main hall.

We’d heard that Iceland can be pricey, but with a bit of planning (and hopping between happy hours), we managed to enjoy the local drinks scene without breaking the bank — some pints came in at just £6! 🍻

Later, we joined locals for a soak at a small, non-touristy geothermal pool in the west side of the city. Cameras aren’t allowed, but it was bliss — sitting in 38–40°C water with crisp October air on our faces. Watching everyone unwind around us felt so authentically Icelandic. The best part? Just £7 per person instead of £90+ at the big spas! The pre-soak shower ritual is strict (no chlorine here — just mineral-rich volcanic water), but it’s all part of the experience.

We also tried a hot dog from the famous stand near the church — featured on Somebody Feed Phil. Sadly, Phil’s Thai picks still rank higher for us; this one was a bit “meh.”

Dinner, however, totally redeemed the day — fish and chips at Kaffivagninn by the harbour. Fresh, crispy, and full of flavour (even if the price reminded us we’re in Iceland 😅).

We’ve completely fallen for Reykjavík — its charm, warmth, and effortless cool have us hooked already. 💙
