Aurora season is here!
Myth: you just look up and there they are.
Reality: you check the cloud forecast four times, drive 40 minutes, and then they appear behind you.
Check vedur.is for clear skies and Hello Aurora for live sightings. When they show up, pull into a proper parking area. The middle of the road is not a viewing spot.🌌

Send this to your aurora-hunting partner.

Every winter we see the same thing: someone at a waterfall in jeans and trainers, reconsidering their life choices.

What you actually need are layers, waterproof clothing, microspikes and a swimsuit (yes, even in winter).

Send this to the friend who’s packing jeans.

A local tip for Icelandic gravel roads: when a car comes the other way, slow down and keep right. Your windscreen and your rental deposit will both thank you.
Remember to enjoy the journey 🚙

Send this to whoever’s doing the driving.

Midnight sun or auroras? You have to pick one.

Summer in Iceland means green valleys, open highland roads and daylight that barely ends. Around the June solstice, the sun hardly sets at all, so you can road trip at midnight in full light.

Winter brings snow-covered landscapes, long dark nights and the chance to see the northern lights dancing overhead. Aurora season runs roughly from September to April. You'll need dark, clear skies and a bit of luck.

Same island, two completely different trips.

Which one are you choosing? Tell us in the comments ☀️ or 🌌

Save this for when you're deciding when to visit. Book your campervan or car at the link in our bio.

Walking on the sky at Stokksnes.

Catch Vestrahorn at low tide on a still morning and the black sand turns into a perfect mirror. Few places in Iceland look this unreal.

How to get the shot:
→ Stokksnes is about 10 minutes from Höfn on the southeast coast
→ The land is private, so pay the small entry fee at the Viking Café
→ Check tide times and go at low tide when the sand is still wet
→ Wind is the enemy. Calm mornings or evenings give the best reflections
→ Bring waterproof boots and expect to get your feet wet

Save this for your Iceland road trip.

The road to Iceland's most photogenic church?

Ingjaldshólskirkja sits on a hill above Hellissandur, on the tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It was built in 1903 and is said to be one of the oldest concrete churches in the world. Local legend even claims Christopher Columbus stopped here in 1477, years before his famous voyage.

Visit in early summer and the road up is lined with purple lupins, which usually bloom from around June into July.

Pair it with a Snæfellsnes loop that takes in Kirkjufell, Djúpalónssandur and Snæfellsjökull National Park, all within easy driving distance.

Save this for your Snæfellsnes itinerary, and find more hidden stops through the link in bio.

Coffee with a view, the campervan way.

Skógafoss is one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls, plunging around 60 metres right off the South Coast. There's a campsite near its base, so you can wake up, open the van door and have breakfast with the falls in front of you before the tour buses arrive.

Worth knowing:
→ Skógafoss is right off the Ring Road, about 2 hours from Reykjavik
→ Climb the staircase beside the falls for views over the coastline
→ The Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail starts at the top if you want to keep going
→ On sunny days, look for rainbows in the spray
→ Bring a waterproof layer, because you'll get misty up close

Save this for your South Coast road trip, and find your van rental through the link in bio.

Kp 1? Don't cancel your night just yet.

Everyone checks the Kp number before they land. But Iceland sits right under the aurora oval, so even a quiet forecast can still bring the norðurljós out.

What really makes or breaks your night:
☁️ Clear skies, so check the cloud cover forecast first
🌑 Real darkness, away from the moon's brightest nights if you can
🚐 Distance from town lights, ideally a short drive out to a campsite or a safe, marked car park

Kp is a much bigger deal somewhere like Scotland. Here, it's the clouds you're watching.

Save this for your aurora nights ✨

Driving in Iceland isn't hard. But a few of the rules surprise people, and some of the mistakes are expensive.

F-roads are 4x4 only. These highland routes usually open around late June and close again in autumn. If you take a 2WD up there, your rental insurance won't cover you.

Before you set off:
Keep your headlights on at all times, day and night, all year.
Speed limits are 90 km/h on paved roads, 80 on gravel and 50 in towns.
Off-road driving is illegal. Moss damaged by tyres can take decades to recover.
Don't stop on the road for photos, even if it looks empty. Pull into a lay-by.
Hold the car door with both hands when it's windy. Gusts can bend it back on its hinges.

Check road.is every morning for live closures and conditions, and safetravel.is for alerts.

You can compare 200+ rentals in one search, including 4x4s for the highlands. Link in bio.

Gravel underneath you, moss-covered lava on every side, and nobody else around.

Some of the best parts of Iceland aren't on any list of sights. They're the places you only reach because you had the time to take the turn-off and see where it led.
