Múlagljúfur Canyon, located in southeast Iceland near Fjallsárlón and Skaftafell, is a breathtaking hidden gem known for its mossy cliffs, dramatic waterfalls, and glacier views. Unlike the popular Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, it remains quiet and untouched, offering a truly wild experience.
Visitors here can enjoy activities such as photography, with incredible opportunities to capture misty moss-covered cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and glacier backdrops, as well as birdwatching and observing the unique vegetation of the canyon. Its location also makes it easy to combine a visit with nearby attractions, such as glacier walks in Skaftafell, boat tours among icebergs at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, or exploring other trails in Vatnajökull National Park.
When preparing, it’s important to dress in layers: a breathable base layer, a warm fleece or down jacket, and a waterproof, windproof outer shell. Quick-dry hiking pants are recommended, and sturdy waterproof boots with good grip are essential. Accessories such as a hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a buff or scarf for wind protection are also useful. Before setting out, always check the weather, as conditions in Iceland change quickly and can make the area dangerous. Since the canyon is remote with no facilities, bring water, snacks, and an offline GPS or hiking app to navigate. Be cautious near the canyon edges, as the cliffs are steep and unstable.
