If you're considering camping in Iceland in August, you're choosing one of the best times of the year to explore the country outdoors.

As someone who lives in Iceland and regularly travels around the country, I often recommend August to visitors who want to experience Iceland's stunning landscapes without worrying too much about extreme weather conditions. The days are still long, temperatures are relatively mild, most roads are accessible, and the Highlands are usually open.

However, there is one important thing you should know before planning your adventure: August is also one of the busiest months of the year.

In fact, many travelers book their rental cars, campsites, accommodations, and camping gear months in advance. This will be even more important in 2026, as Iceland is expected to welcome an exceptional number of visitors due to the solar eclipse taking place in August.

Hamrar Camping, Akureyri 🌲🏕️
Not your typical Iceland campsite 👇
Tucked beside Kjarnaskógur, Hamrar feels more like a park than a campsite — trees, walking trails, and even ponds 🌿

✨ Why it’s worth it:
• Clean showers, kitchen & chill areas
• Activities like frisbee golf + mini golf

Perfect mix of nature + comfort without going fully remote.

📍 Ideal stop if you’re driving around Iceland.

Exploring Iceland with toddlers = totally worth it 🇮🇸
Yes, it takes more planning. Yes, you’ll stop more often. But the moments? Unmatched. Watching your little one experience Iceland’s landscapes is something else🥹

Skip the struggle, keep the adventure.
