42 Waterfalls in the stunning fjords of East Iceland
1️⃣Hengifoss : high in the mountain looking majestic, measuring 120m & reachable through an hour-long hike with rewarding views at every step.
2️⃣Fardagafoss : small waterfall in a beautiful gorge, with a cave at its base that long ago was believed to be a portal connecting it to Gufufoss in Fjardará. The legend says a cat disappeared into a crack in the cave wall and reappeared behind Gufufoss in Seyðisfjorður.
3️⃣Gufufos in Miðhúsaá : scenic waterfall surrounded by rock cliffs. A folktale tells of a pot filled with gold hanging behind the waterfall. To this day, nobody managed to get the pot, but travelers are welcome to try and get it if they see it.
4️⃣Litlanesfoss : falls of a unique and beautiful columnar basalt wall
5️⃣Stuðlafoss : a columnar basalt waterfall, not very large but definitely beautiful
6️⃣Staðarárfoss : beautiful spread-out waterfall measuring around 80m
7️⃣Rjúkandi : there are 3 waterfalls with this name in Jökuldalur valley, Ysti-Rjúkandi being the largest and the most beautiful measuring around 200m.
8️⃣Klifbrekkufossar : often bypassed due to poor road condition, this waterfall is surrounded by a beautiful fjord and a great number of waterfalls. Often during summer, whales are spotted in Mjóifjörður.
