Florence is often described as an open-air museum. But some of its most meaningful treasures are still made quietly, by hand.

Tucked away on a side street, Il Torchio is a small workshop where traditional bookbinding is still practiced the old way. Sheets of paper are folded, sewn and pressed by hand. Leather is cut carefully. Spines are shaped slowly. Nothing is rushed...

There is no performance here. No polished showroom energy. Just tools, paper, thread and patience... This is the Florence many visitors miss — workshops where craftsmanship is part of daily life, not an attraction.

Over the years, I’ve created curated shopping maps highlighting independent Florentine artisans like this — places you would not easily stumble upon without local guidance. If you’re interested in discovering Florence beyond the main shopping streets, I’ve shared further details on my website (listed in the profile of this page).

FLORENCE LEGENDS: The Bull of Santa Maria del Fiore

High above the crowds at Santa Maria del Fiore, near the Porta della Mandorla, a stone bull’s head protrudes from the façade. Most people never notice it.

According to local legend, a master mason placed it there as a quiet act of mockery. The bull’s gaze is directed toward a nearby house that once belonged to a notoriously jealous husband. Tired of the man’s complaints, the sculptor is said to have immortalised his revenge in stone.

Whether true or not, it’s a reminder that Florence’s grandeur is filled with very human stories — rivalry, humour and pride carved into marble...

Here's a post from my friend Elisabetta Bardi:

My name is Elisabetta, and I welcome my guests to the historic village of Certaldo, a place where time slows down and Tuscany reveals its most authentic soul.

The apartments are located in the heart of the borgo and are charming residences, each with its own character. Carefully curated and fully equipped with modern comforts, they are designed to suit different kinds of travelers: the solo explorer, couples seeking atmosphere, business travelers, families, and even groups of up to 11 people, always with the same sense of warmth and attention.

I love accompanying my guests as they discover the magical land of Valdelsa, with its gentle hills, quiet villages, genuine flavors, and landscapes that linger in your memory. We are just a short distance from some of Tuscany’s most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites, yet far enough from mass tourism to experience the region at a slower, more authentic pace.

Certaldo is easily accessible thanks to its railway station, well connected to major international airports, and it is the perfect starting point for a holiday dedicated to art and culture, food and wine experiences, local craftsmanship, e-bike tours, and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.

I enjoy sharing authentic places, true experiences, and little local secrets, so that every stay becomes a precious memory, the kind that makes you want to return.

If these words have inspired you, even just a little, I invite you to discover the apartments at: https://labellavistatoscana.it/ and treat yourself to an unforgettable Tuscan getaway.

La Bellavista Toscana è un modo di vivere e di scoprire una delle zone più belle d’Italia, uno dei luoghi più incantevoli al mondo, ricco di storia, cultura, paesaggi e luoghi mozzafiato
