Yes there is a fire here in Tignale and its sad to see woodland burnjng but no alarmism please. My house was right beside where the fire started. Fantastic volunteer firefighters worked all night to keep the houses safe and although we evacuated the first night we have been back home ever since. No houses were damaged and no people hurt which is the main thing.

here is an update on the fire in Tignale: the situation is under control, the emergency teams are working professionally and there is no danger to people or homes. We are all safe.

Unfortunately, some woodland is burning, which saddens us deeply, but we kindly ask you not to panic.
To those who have already booked their holiday: please don’t cancel. It would be a real pity, especially if your stay has already been paid for.

Before making any decision, please contact your accommodation directly, as they will provide accurate and up‑to‑date information.

Despite all the hatred, wars, stupidity and hardships currently in the world I hope you all have a serene and happy Easter and enjoy the holiday. Let’s hope very soon people will start to embrace peace rather than war! Gilli

Wow. I have just realised that I haven't written anything here since August and now it's almost Christmas! It has been a very busy year - I finally closed my website gillisholidays.com as so many coeliac travellers now find plenty of hotels and recommendations online so don't need my help anymore. So that would make you think I had nothing to do - several people have sent me emails wishing me a happy retirement...... but no such thing. I have been busy helping friends rent their apartments here in Tignale, a UK based motorcycle company that I have worked with in the past decided they want to do a tour as far as Sardinia and Lake Garda in 2026 so that has been fun finding the accommodation. Last but not least my niece decided in May that she wants to get married on Garda in July 2026 so 'Auntie' has been busy finding suitable guest accommodation and also become events coordinator for the parties the day before and after (luckily we have a wedding planner for the main day). So looks like 2026 is sorted too.......

In all of this if anyone is still interested in holidaying on Lake Garda - I still work with several hotels and especially those here in Tignale - or Stresa on Lake Maggiore please let me know as I would love to help you find the best hotel.

Now I just want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy 2026.

As you can see ‘everything’ happens in Tignale in August as it does in pretty well all the villages round the lake!
No time to be bored…….

I am sure that most of you know I live on Lake Garda but recently I visited Lake Maggiore and spent a long weekend at Stresa and it was just SO nice! The scenery is more ‘gentle’ and less dramatic than here and very relaxing. Lush vegetation, beautiful villas, the famous Borromean islands and the long promenade in Stresa with some very beautifully kept hotels that seem to come from another era.
You can do as much or as little as you like. It’s great to wonder round the pedestrian centre of Stresa and sit in the square and another day take one of the many boats to the Borromean islands. We also visited smaller Lake Orta and the old town of Orta San Giulio. The only thing still on the bucket list is the Centovalli small gauge railway that runs over bridges and through ravines from Domodossola to Locarno in Switzerland and you can return to Stresa by ferry.
I stayed at Hotel Royal the hotel I have used for several years. Again so refreshing with some touches you rarely find these days. For example - the usual buffet breakfast but instead of the rush and queue for the coffee machine and constant cup refills, coffee and milk (as much as you want) is brought to the table in jugs. For those on half board there is a good choice of menu. From the hotel you have wonderful views onto the islands, especially from the roof terrace and there is a ferry stop just a couple of minutes walk.
So a great place to stay and although I am closing my website I will still be using this hotel next year if anyone is interested in a visit.

Over the busy Bank holiday weekend, despite all the traffic, I managed a visit to Borghetto. Just south of Lake Garda close to Valeggio sul Mincio and so so pretty. Well worth a visit and if you love gardens and parks you need to fit in a visit to Giardini di Sigurta’ too!

Well today, 26/03/2025 spring has finally ‘sprung’! First thing this morning still cool and then suddenly clouds dispersed 🌥️ and out came the sun! 🌞🌞 So on our return from Brescia from a hospital check up for hubby we became tourists and stopped for a drink and ice cream on the way home.
After winter the first warm days are SO nice - you suddenly notice the olive groves, the cyprus trees and lots of white painted houses on the hillsides and there are some magnificent magnolias around too.
On the way up to Tignale we stopped again for a couple of photos - I never get tired of this view and hope you will all agree with me! Just another few days and everything will be open for summer season 2025!
