UNESCO pays tribute to the memory of Pope Francis. He was a powerful voice for peace and human dignity through education, science and culture. He was deeply committed to the protection of nature and to the ethics of emerging technologies. As a leading figure in interreligious dialogue, he was also a strong supporter of ’s reconstruction of Mosul’s Old City. We extend our deepest condolences to Catholics around the world.

The Global Geoparks Network would like to convey our deepest condolences to the families of all the victims caused by the floods that have affected Spain during the last days.
In addition, we deeply regret for all the damage caused by the devastating floods!

Global Geoparks have among our objectives education and awareness for natural hazards and the prevention of natural disasters, the effects of climate change!
Global Geoparks express their solidarity and cooperation with Geopark territories and their communities.

GEOPARKS HABITATS and BIODIVERSITY

The biodiversity found in tropical forest is exceptional in terms of both species numbers and uniqueness.
But they are rapidly disappearing before our eyes. The decline of species, shrinking of natural areas, soil and water pollution, and degradation of diverse ecosystems due to climate change.
This is the reality that we face today.
This is what we are leaving behind.
We must act now to save habitats and biodiversity.

There are 195 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 48 countries around the globe.
Many of them are located close to the equator and are hosting tropical forests.
Geoparks are working with an holistic consept on protection and management of protected areas.
Geoparks are managing heritage in natural areas giving special emphasis to the links between geodiversity and biodiversity, protecting habitats and raising awareness through the development of educational activities and the proportion of sustainable tourism.
