Most people who visit Sardinia fall in love with its coastline. What many don’t realize is that much of what makes Sardinia special today exists because people fought to protect it. Sardinia is an autonomous region, and decades ago regional laws were introduced to prevent uncontrolled development along the coast. Today, in most cases, new construction must remain at least 3 km from the shoreline. Those protections are one of the reasons Sardinia still has stretches of coastline that remain wild, natural, and accessible.

Now, that protection is under threat.

Despite opposition from local residents, environmental associations, municipalities, and the regional government itself, the Italian government is pushing forward plans that would allow a Brazilian investment group to build yet another luxury resort inside an area of extraordinary environmental, ecological, and cultural value. The proposed development would be built on the coast facing the spectacular Tavolara Island, one of the most iconic landscapes in Sardinia and part of a protected marine area known for its biodiversity, crystal-clear waters, and unique ecosystems.

This is not a project being built for local communities. It is another luxury development designed for a small number of wealthy visitors, while the environmental cost would be borne by everyone. Many of us believe Sardinia does not need more luxury resorts. It needs its remaining natural spaces to be protected.

#2016 - the year I went to India, Jerusalem for the first time, Slovenia, and traveled around Sardinia on a tuktuk. I had less wrinkles, less worries, and much darker hair. It’s been a crazy 10 years, for sure!

Younger generations in Sardinia now celebrate , but we do have our very own traditions for the day of the dead.

My favorite is Su Prugadoriu, celebrated in , a small mountain town in the region.

The festival lasts 3 days and involves eating traditional foods like culurgiones, live music (from traditional Sardinian instruments to jazz bands roaming the streets), chestnuts, museums and a joyful atmosphere.

If you are visiting Sardinia in the fall, add it to your itinerary!
