Two colossal bronze figures crammed into a niche built for only one: in Renaissance Florence, everyone predicted disaster for Andrea del Verrocchio. Commissioned by the Merchants' Court to sculpt the Incredulity of Saint Thomas for Orsanmichele, he faced Donatello's marble tabernacle, designed for a single saint. But Leonardo da Vinci's master solved the puzzle with pure genius: he raised Christ slightly inside the arch and made Thomas step forward, leaving his left foot suspended in mid-air right above Via dei Calzaiuoli! For the first time, a statue broke the boundary of architecture to step into our world.

Today, the bronze standing outdoors on Via dei Calzaiuoli is an exact replica: Verrocchio's original 1483 bronze group is safeguarded inside the Orsanmichele Museum in Florence.
