🇮🇹 La vita di Antonino appartiene a un passato che nelle città sembra non avere più nulla da insegnare. La frenesia della modernità impone i suoi ritmi. Così, mentre il mondo gira sempre più veloce, la saggezza d’altri tempi viene lasciata indietro.
Antonino faceva il carbonaro sulle montagne. Guadagnava poco ma riusciva a dare da mangiare ai suoi figli. I fratelli più piccoli indossavano i vestiti di quelli più grandi. Il pane non si buttava, ma lo si conservava per la colazione o lo si dava alle galline, che giravano dentro casa. Nulla veniva sprecato e nessuno se ne stava con le mani in mano. Era una vita dura, una vita che in molti oggi non sarebbero capaci di vivere, abituati come siamo all’abbondanza e alle comodità. Tuttavia, nonostante la fatica e la povertà, ogni sera ci si rallegrava con un paio di bicchieri di vino, perché altri erano i valori da perseguitare: semplicità, famiglia, amicizia. In questa fotografia, Antonino ci rimprovera di aver dimenticato ciò che è veramente importante. Però il suo sguardo è anche soddisfatto, perché in fondo è grazie a lui se ora la vita è meno difficile.

🇬🇧 Antonino’s life belongs to a past that in the cities seems to no longer have anything to teach. The frenzy of modernity imposes its rhythms. So, as the world turns faster and faster, the wisdom of old times is left behind. Antonino was a coalman in the mountains. He did not earn much but managed to feed his children. The younger brothers wore the clothes of the older ones. The bread was not thrown away, but was saved for breakfast or given to the chickens, which roamed inside the house. Nothing was wasted and no one sat idle. It was a hard life, a life that many today would not be able to live, accustomed as we are to abundance and comfort. However, despite the fatigue and poverty, every evening they cheered up with a couple of glasses of wine, because there were other values to pursue: simplicity, family, friendship. In this photograph, Antonino reproaches us for having forgotten what is truly important. But his look is also satisfied, because after all it is thanks to him that life is less difficult now.
