The athlete from Messina, who lost his father when she was only 12, will represent Italy at the Tokyo Paralympics at the end of August.

will also be present at the Paralympics, which will take place from 24 August to 5 September. For the young athlete, judo is not just a simple sport: her reason for living and what is most beautiful and precious. Carolina is, in fact, the daughter of former Olympic wrestler Katarzyna Juszczak and judo master Franco Costa, who passed away when she was only 12 years old. “My father was my pillar – she says the blue – and losing him so soon made me great ahead of time. It was a bad blow, and at that moment, only judo was able to give me the strength to go on and never give up, as he had taught me ».

A life lesson that Carolina also treasured after her, when unfortunately she, at the age of 22, discovered that she was suffering from keratoconus, a degenerative disease of the cornea, which made her visually impaired. «I remember that I realized I had some visual discomfort while I was participating in the Absolute Championships – explains the Messina -, so I did some exams, and unfortunately, the diagnosis did not leave much hope. I stopped for a year, undergoing various operations. Still, there was nothing to be done ». The girl was afraid of being forced to abandon the beloved sport, which she had started practicing since she was very young, taking her first steps on the mat. «I was afraid – confesses the twenty-seven year old – of having to let go of the dream of participating in the Olympics. But then, by chance, I discovered that Paralympic judo existed and that news marked my rebirth ».

So once again, it was judo that saved her: “After having obtained the eligibility and enrolled in Fispic (the Italian Paralympic Sports Federation for the visually impaired and the blind) – continues Carolina -, in 2018 I played the first important competition: World Championships in Lisbon, where I finished third, winning the bronze medal ». That competition allowed her to regain self-confidence, reaching many milestones, such as the gold medal at the IBSA European Championships in 2019, the Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, and the Ibsa Grand Prix in Warwick. The challenges that have made her conquer the scores for the qualification for Tokyo and have made her ahead of her in the world ranking. Her feelings related to the next Paralympics are a mixture of emotion and fear: “I still don’t realize that you will represent Italy in Tokyo – reveals the young woman -. I will meet opponents that I have already faced; the most difficult challenge will be reconfirming myself. What worries me most, however, is the situation linked to the pandemic ».

Carolina wants to feel the warmth of her Messina. In this place, she chose to stay by opening a gym where she teaches judo to the little ones: “If I were to win the medal, I would dedicate it to the people of Messina, to my loved ones and above all to my dad, who I know who would be very proud of me. “And it is he, the “special” fan, who will support her at the Olympics from up there.

“Tokyo 2020 Paralympics – Emotions that mark”. This is the claim that the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation wanted to use to accompany the para-dressage athletes engaged in another exciting adventure in the coming days that will once again unite the whole country and, in particular, the entire world of equestrian sports.

Taking part in an edition of the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games is certainly every athlete’s dream. Sara Morganti, Francesca Salvadè, Carola Semperboni, and Federica Sileoni have an excellent task and probably more than one: not only to enter the Equestrian Park rectangle and represent Italy, but also to act as a reference point for many Paralympic athletes and for equestrian sports enthusiasts.

The four blue athletes are real idols of equestrian sports. Some of them have already represented Italy in London and Rio de Janeiro; Sara Morganti is the reigning World Champion (technical and freestyle) in Tryon and has, among other things, a gold and silver medal at the WEG in Normandy.

The blue of the Italy Team of Paradressage will therefore be a model to follow for a movement, including integrated sports and assisted interventions with the horses. Italy, within the FISE, sees numbers in significant growth. About a thousand members practice assisted interventions with the horses divided between the centers authorized to practice this type of activity: from integrated sports to Paralympic riding. The number of technical figures specialized in these particular areas is also constantly growing.

Getting to play an edition of the Games is undoubtedly the result of years and years of training and sacrifices. Yet, this dream may come true for our four athletes as they preparare for Tokyo. So go girls!
Italy is with you!

Pancalli: “A double historic milestone has already been reached”

The National Board of the CIP has given the green light to the names that make up the Italian Delegation that will participate in the XVI edition of the Summer Paralympic Games, held in Tokyo from 24 August to 5 September 2021.

Italy presents itself with the highest number of athletes since participating in a Paralympics: 113 blues engaged in 16 disciplines: athletics, badminton, canoeing, rowing, cycling, horse riding, judo, swimming, fencing, sitting volleyball, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo, shooting, archery, triathlon.

A Delegation led by the head of mission Juri Stara, Secretary-General of the Italian Paralympic Committee, and led by the two standard-bearers Beatrice Vio (fencing) and Federico Morlacchi (swimming) with a balanced gender representation.

“We are more than a month away from the start of the Paralympic Games, and we can already celebrate a double historic milestone. Italy will present itself in Tokyo with the largest Delegation ever and with female participation higher than the male one. We will go to Japan knowing that we have a great team to give our country many joys and satisfaction.”, Luca Pancalli declares President of the Italian Paralympic Committee.

“The exponential increase in athletes who are part of the Paralympic Delegation means expansion of the base, and it means excellent work done by the CIP with all the sports associations. On the part of the Government, starting with Premier Draghi, whom I met this morning and who once again shared the path taken on sport, there is maximum availability towards this sector which I am convinced can contribute to the radical change in the culture of our country. Paralympic athletes are the same as the Olympic ones, demonstrating that sporting culture and integration go hand in hand. I am also happy that the Italian athletes are having their say.
