Santa Margherita and Portofino 🇮🇹

When we planned this trip, the main reason for including Santa Margherita was so we could walk the Cinque Terra, (the five Villages along this coastline). The walk is reputably quite stunning and can be completed comfortably in a day although many take their time and spread it across a few days and really take in the amazing scenery. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were informed that parts of the walk had been washed out by recent storms and you could only walk certain sections, and we would have to bay hop the rest by boat.

One of the world’s great wonders......Venice! 🇮🇹

Lake Como was a hard place to leave but we must move on, Venice awaits us and once again we are left absolutely amazed in so many ways.

We caught the train from Lake Como back to Milan to transfer to another train for the 2 1/2-hour trek to Venice. I had pre-booked all of our train journeys prior to departing NZ so we just had to find the correct platform and be on time.... pretty easy I thought! Our tickets were in carriage number 2, so we went to the 2nd carriage, hopped on and found the correct seats for the four of us, stacked the luggage in the luggage area, and sat down to relax. About 3-4 minutes later a group approached and said we were in their seats, I was totally confused because their tickets showed carriage number 26, but they pointed out that this was carriage 26 and carriage number 2 was at the other end of the train! Luckily, we had a bit of time up our sleeve, so we collected all the luggage got off the train and walked all the way to the other end of the platform and relocated ourselves into the correct carriage.

I thought to myself that I wouldn’t make that mistake again!

Lake Como 🛥️

A Truly magical location!

After a long 12.5-hour flight from Singapore, we finally landed in Milan. While we were in Italy, we ended up in Milan 3 times so one would expect that we know it quite well. The truth is though, I’ve only ever seen the airport and Railway Station! 😁Milan was the hub of our travels, a train from there to Como and return then another return trip to Venice, and then from Milan down to Santa Margherita.

The European Adventure Begins! 🇸🇬

Our cruise to the Caribbean just over a year ago gave us the taste for more extensive travel and with Mary’s cancer being an ongoing issue we had decided to make every day count and take advantage of the opportunities that had been presented to us. After our last trip, Mary’s cancer did come back so again it was back in for more treatment. Once again it was more chemotherapy and treatment and once again it had worked so she was back in remission, perfect timing for another adventure!

Homewood Bound ✈️

No rush, let’s take a few extra days and go via San Fran!

With all of the Islands of the cruise now behind us, it was time to relax for two days at sea on our way back to Fort Lauderdale. Alana and Dan, (along with Adam and Jessie) had suggested that Mary and I join them for a few days in San Francisco before flying back home to New Zealand. We hadn’t been there, so it sounded like a good plan to us.

Firstly though, it was two leisurely days around the pool, basically with nothing to do and all day to do it! 😁 These can be very social days; you are all together, it is hot, you are just in and out of the pool, and also very thankful that you purchased the “Drinks package!”

Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas 🛳️

Mecca of the Caribbean.

Our last Island destination of this magnificent cruise and after the full-on day, (and night!) we had yesterday in St Maarten. We are all a little weary today, so we had nothing too adventurous planned. St Thomas is renowned for its Duty-Free shopping, so we planned to take a stroll along the foreshore to the shopping district and then find some transport to take us to the famous Magens Bay beach.

Philipsburg, St Maarten ⛱️

Because of the planning that had obviously gone into today’s visit of St Maarten we all had higher than usual levels of anticipation. Alana and Dan had a plan, and we were just the tourists following along! We had a full turnout of our numbers including our new friends Roy and Sally plus Dan’s father Stuart, 11 in total.

We had an earlier than usual start so after a good breakfast we were ready to head off the ship. Once we were all together, we all followed Dan for a short distance from the port where we got our first hint of what the day had ahead of us ........ Quad bikes! We were going to tour the Island on our new 2-seater mode of transport.
