Renovating our medieval palazzo in Abruzzo, Italy - Saving a cultural heritage monument

Yet another problem to solve at the palazzo. Nobody said that a renovation project would be easy, particularly in Abruzzo, italy, let alone it being cultural heritage, but ever since we bought this palazzo it's been one thing after another. But where there is a problem, there is (usually) a solution.

Even though we've not moved in and the barn is not completed; no floor (just rough concrete), no heating, no electricity. If it is already so ideal for a teenage Ferragosto party, just imagine what it will be like when complete: sound system, lighting, projector and screen for cinema evenings, banqueting tables or maybe pool table and ping pong table, basketball nets, a floor for dancing and rollerskating for me! Oh gosh I can't wait!!!
Still a way to go and with no current funds, but we will make it happen! 💪

It's been a while since we've updated you about any progress at our Italian Palazzo Renovation Project in San Benedetto in Perillis, Abruzzo, Italy but then again, progress has been pretty slow. We pop up there every now and then but for the last months most days we've gone up no builders have been there. It's frustrating when you get told they are going to do something over certain days and then you go and check on progress and nobody is there.

There have been holidays and absences of builders for personal reasons which amount to quite a few weeks that have been lost. So, therefore, our updates about the progress on the staircase in these photos is very exciting for us.

These photos popped up today on my personal Facebook as a '5 years ago' reminder. OMG 5 years ago, really? Look how cute and little the kids were. Now as teenagers they are not interested in moving to a small village and leaving their fantastic social lives behind in Popoli and Sulmona. Still, we are sure they will appreciate the palazzo when they are adults!

But if we were going to write a book, this is what the title would be. Would you buy it?

We left the UK in 2018 with our children to renovate and move into our ancient palazzo in Abruzzo, Italy. Little did we know what a long, exhausting, and expensive rollercoaster ride of a renovation journey we were beginning.

Palazzo San Benedetto, the true story about our dream to restore our unique fortified cultural heritage palazzo damaged by the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, just one year after having bought it.

With parts of the palazzo over 1200 years old, Palazzo San Benedetto is not a project for the faint hearted, nor those still learning Italian whilst also finding out how to deal with the national Italian bureaucracy as well as the local ‘Abruzzeaucracy’

If we had known what we know now, would we have done things differently?
