There are numerous great houses in Jamaica. In the yesteryear, they were an important icon in Jamaica's sugar economy. The great houses were the base of authority on the sugar plantation. The size of the Great Houses was determined by the wealth of the owner and profitability of the plantation. These houses were either two storey buildings made of brick, cut stone, mortar and wood or one-storey buildings made of wood, cut stone or Spanish walling or wattle and daub.
Many plantation owners were English consequently the Georgian Period of 1720-1760 inspire many local construction, during 1760-1830 Jamaican Georgian style developed. Important architectural features of the Great Houses included wide wraparound verandas, jalousies, and sash windows to capitalize on the Caribbean climate.
Today it is an historical symbol of a significant period in the Jamaican story. Many still stunning and are fantastic venues to have a dream wedding. Providing the backdrop for fabulous photos.
