Animal Farm... where all the animals are equal but some are more equal than others!

04/01/2026

With the trek to Animal Farm finally complete, we begin to survey the damage.

The main house suffered significant roof damage, with extensive flooding that continued with repeated rainfall in the days following Hurricane Melissa. One guest cottage lost its roof entirely, and most of the other structures sustained significant or total loss.

We’ll be sharing more on the recovery efforts in the videos to come including what Binky () decided to tackle once we reached the main house. Stay tuned.

The Great River rose to unthinkable heights during the passage of Hurricane Melissa, raging through Lethe village and changing everything in its path πŸŒ€.

Food and supplies are scarce, even for the wild birds, now coming closer than ever before 🦜.

We walked slowly, greeting familiar faces, passing homes where neighbours lost almost everything. Tragically, initial reports indicate that two lives were lost in Lethe, and one in Copse, where Animal Farm is situated πŸ’”.

In part 3, we arrive at Animal Farm to see the effects so stay tuned.

If you’d like to support our recovery or that of our neighbours in Lethe or Copse, please reach out. Every bit of help makes a difference. We accept donations in kind, by PayPal or wire transfer πŸ™πŸΎ.

One day prior, one of my team members walked the almost 18 km from Animal Farm to Montego Bay in a fearless bid to make contact after the hurricane.

When I finally reached the farm a day later, after parking and walking about 3.3 km, the place was unrecognisable, more like a winter forest than our lush tropical valley.

Part 1 – Journey to Animal Farm: After Hurricane Melissa πŸ‡―πŸ‡²

Next, we’ll share the rest of the walk, until the farm comes into view (unlike ever before!) from the lookout point on the access road.

Can you imagine the scene when the river engulfed Lethe village?

πŸ“£ πŸ‘‹πŸΎ To all my dear family, friends, and associates who have been checking on my welfare with the passing of Hurricane Melissa, I am sorry that I am only just able to respond.

The truth is that I was totally isolated and completely incommunicado until a few days ago when I made it into Kingston. I still have neither water nor electricity in Mobay and I’m back to my β€˜dark’ state; no phone, no news, no wifi, emails etc.

Re the effect of Melissa, I was badly hit at Animal Farm and at Doctors Surgi Clinic. The restoration has already begun, and the rebuilding, whatever form that takes, is to follow in a phased basis, as I think it would be foolish to expect a quick recovery from such a devastating natural disaster. Mother Nature rules!

We will share footage of the aftermath and of our journey to recovery in due course so please stay tuned.

Thanks for all your kind wishes and expressions of concern.

Hurricane prep and an ambush from a mango hummingbird. Did you clock the moment when it zoomed through the frame?

Feeding frenzy before the rain. A few days ago, but a common sight here at Animal Farm - streamertail and mango hummingbirds crowding the feeders. It’s been rainy daily for weeks, and they always fuel up before the downpour.

Praying for safety for all of us, people, farm animals, and wildlife, as Hurricane Melissa passes.
