Fujisan Sengen Shrine Fujinomiya: A Historical Gateway to Mt. Fuji ⛩️

There are a plethora of incredible cultural sites to enjoy in the Fuji area when planning your trip with Fuji Outdoor🥾.

Steeped in history at the base of Mt. Fuji, Fujisan Sengen Shrine in Fujinomiya City is a must-see! 🤩 This powerful shrine, originally built over 1000 years ago for protection from volcanic eruptions, became the most important Sengen shrine in Japan. 🌋🛡️

It's historically known as the "front entrance" to Mt. Fuji 🗻, where climbers would purify themselves at Wakutama Pond before their ascent. While most now start from the 5th Station, the shrine still marks the opening and closing of the climbing season with grand ceremonies. 🎉

More often than not, we get to punch above the clouds at around 3000m.
Though clear views are epic, so are the ones where we look down at the clouds.

On some summer nights, we even get to see lightning happening well below us!

The Kongozue is a traditional wooden staff that you will find lots of climbers using!

It's an alternative to hiking poles which we always recommend!
The Kongozue can be branded at most huts along the trails with the final one at the summit!

A classic souvenir and we sometimes see people with a staffs that have been past down generations with stamps dating decades apart!

Its not uncommon to see ill prepared climbers on Mt Fuji.

While on the best of days with no wind or rain, you may get away wearing cotton or with running shoes, bad situations quickly become worse in the mountains.
Weather and temperatures change quickly and we cool a lot when not moving and therefore important to bring the right gear with us!

If you get wet on day 1 of a 2 day trip, you'll be wear the same thing again the next day, so avoid cotton (DEFINITELY NO JEANS).

Be smart and be safe!

It's getting warm in town and the official climbing season is just around the corner!

Remember when planning your trip to Mt. Fuji that although it's scorching hot all over Japan in the summer, it still gets cold at the higher elevations. There are usually traces of snow until the end of July!
