Held over two days in early August, the Noshiro Tanabata Festival in Akita Prefecture serves as a colorful celebration of Japanese folklore and tradition. The event includes a variety of impressive lantern floats parading around the Noshiro City Hall area, including one of Japan’s tallest lantern floats – it towers at an incredible 24.1 meters in height.

Held over two days in early August, the Noshiro Tanabata Festival in Akita Prefecture serves as a colorful celebration of Japanese folklore and tradition. The event includes a variety of impressive lantern floats parading around the Noshiro City Hall area.

During festival time, the whole village would participate in a tug of war. Back then, it used to take days to get to Tokyo, not that the villagers went there. In fact, some villagers spent their whole lives here, never knowing what it was like to be in the capital. Instead, they carved toys out of wood, collected baby bees for tempura or stir fry, and made their own kind of very thick soba, now famous around Japan as Itsukidani soba.

Why is this sake named after the Cicada? Maybe my mother in law has a clue, having collected Cicadas and butterflies in her youth in this mountain village, filled with the joy of nature.

Nestled in the Northernmost Prefecture of Japan’s mainland sits Hachinohe, a city along the Pacific Coast. Every year during the Summer, the city comes alive with one of the biggest festivals in the region.

The Sansha Taisai festival takes place every year, and is considered one of the main festivals of the city, taking place at the end of July into early August, usually lasting for 3 to 4 days. The celebration has been recognised by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage.

Hachiko's story is known around the world and it speaks volumes about a dog's loyalty to its owner. The story goes that Hachiko, whose lineage came from the Akita Prefecture, would go back and forth to Shibuya every day to wait for his owner to return from work

Each February 14th the samurai district of heats up--and no, it isn't because of 's Day. The Fire and Snow Festival light up the town in bonfires and, more spectacularly, participants swinging fireballs over their heads.

The Kakunodate Fire and Snow Festival (火振りかまくら Hiburi Kamakura) takes place in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture annually on February 13 and 14. Onlookers can also participate without reservations and free of charge.

Julia’s Cross celebrates the life of Julia Ota, who after being exiled to the island for her faith, had a positive impact on Kozushima’s people through her charitable acts.
