Founded in the 3rd century, Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest and most significant Shinto shrines ⛩️

Its most famous sight is probably the Taiko-bashi Bridge. The bridge’s high, dramatic arch is said to resemble a rainbow connecting the human world to the realm of the gods. Historically, crossing it was considered an act of purification that cleansed the mind and body before approaching the main sanctuary.

Located in Osaka, it makes an easy stop while exploring the city 🌿

Famous for its five wooden arches, the blossoms frame the bridge beautifully

Known for its koinobori (colorful carp streamers) and a massive 2km tunnel of trees that bloom later than those in central Japan

🗼 Chidorigafuchi (Tokyo)
A scenic moat at the Imperial Palace. It is best experienced by rowboat, especially at night when the trees are illuminated!

🏯 Himeji Castle (Hyogo)

Nestled in the heart of Aomori Prefecture, Hirosaki Park is widely regarded as one of Japan’s best cherry blossom spots, with over 2,600 trees 💗

The park surrounds the historic Hirosaki Castle, creating a beautiful contrast between traditional Edo-period architecture and vibrant spring blooms 🏯

One of its most iconic features is the “Hana-ikada” (flower carpet), where fallen petals blanket the surface of the castle moats, turning the water into a river of pink!

🌸 Blooming period: mid-April to early May

If you missed cherry blossom season in Tokyo or Kyoto, you can still catch it in Hokkaido 🌸

Because of its cooler climate, cherry blossoms here usually bloom later, from late April to early May.

In southern Hokkaido, Hakodate is a popular area for viewing. Two well-known spots include:

🏯 Matsumae Castle
Located in Hokkaido’s only traditional castle town, this area has about 10,000 cherry trees across many varieties. Because they bloom at different times, the season here can last several weeks!

🛶 Goryokaku Park
A spacious park with a moat lined by around 1,600 cherry trees. You can walk along the paths, rent a boat, or get a panoramic view from Goryokaku Tower!

Spring at a castle just outside Tokyo 🏯🌸

Odawara Castle is a historic landmark in Kanagawa, first built in the 1400s and once home to the Hojo clan, a powerful samurai family.

A day trip worth adding to your itinerary, especially during cherry blossom season!

The best part? It’s less crowded that central areas!

Japan has three gardens considered the country’s “Great Gardens,” and one of them is in Okayama! 🌿

Korakuen Garden was created over 300 years ago by a feudal lord as a place to host guests and enjoy the scenery. The garden’s wide lawns and ponds create a scenery that shifts as you walk, including Okayama Castle in the distance! 🏯

Nearby is Kibitsu Shrine, recognized for its 360-meter wooden covered corridor, one of the longest shrine walkways in Japan. At the entrance, rows of large lanterns welcome visitors before the path continues through the forested shrine grounds.

Save these for your Okayama visit!
