[A Qualification You MUST Have to Drive in Japan]

Self-drive tours have become increasingly common, especially in Hokkaido, Japan.
But when we renting a car abroad, the most important part is our license. As a foreigner in Japan, what must we have to drive in Japan?

Foreign visitors will need to have one of the driver’s license below to drive in Japan:
① Japanese driver’s license
② International driving permit or translation booklet depending on the country.
(International driving permit in accordance with 1949 Geneva convention)
※ Drivers from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovakia, Monaco, Taiwan can drive in Japan for one year with your local driver’s license and a Japanese translation.
※ International driver’s permit are valid for one year for each entry. Re-entry date does not restart if you hold a Japanese residence visa.
※ Japan does not recognize international driver’s license issued under 1926 France Convention, 1943 Washington Convention, and 1968 Vienna Convention.

What is an International Driving Permit(IDP)?
An IDP is a multiple-language translation of the driver’s license that verifies your driving capability. If you hold it, it will be allowed to drive a private motor vehicle in any country that recognizes IDPs.

How to get the IDP?
You can go to the automobile association offices of your country for more detailed information.

Singaporean can apply for international driving permits at any AA Singapore outlet or online IDP application at www.aas.com.sg.com
In Malaysia, you can attend to any Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan(JPJ) offices around the country to submit your IDP application. You can also go to the Automobile Association of Malaysia(AAM) to submit your IDP application.

※ Carry both of your IDP and your driver’s license when driving abroad.
※ Obtain your IDP in the same country that issued your driver’s license.
※ You may not use your IDP to drive within the country in which it was issued.

——By NO Brainer

[HOKKAIDO TRIP: NAVIGATION AND TRANSPORTATION]Using a public transportation in Japan, Hokkaido, is not cheap. So, how do...
14/11/2016

[HOKKAIDO TRIP: NAVIGATION AND TRANSPORTATION]

Using a public transportation in Japan, Hokkaido, is not cheap. So, how do we save money? We would like to recommend two economic options:
ETC Card and Hokkaido Expressway Pass!

【ETC CARD】
In Japan, the majority of rental car companies provide ETC Card in their cars. The price is around 500 to 1,000 JPY. If you rent this card you may still have to pay for expressway fees but you will get discounts. The most commonly used ETC discounts are : Weekend Discount and Night Discount.

A) Weekend Discount: On Saturday, Sunday and National Holidays, users of standard size cars can enjoy 30% off (except Tokyo and Osaka areas).

B) Night Discount: Using expressways during 0am-4am, all the users can enjoy 30% off.

The first type is the best deal for travelers. If you come to Japan on holidays or on weekends it’s better to get the ETC Card.

【HOKKAIDO EXPRESSWAY PASS】
Hokkaido Expressway Pass is only purchasable for foreign travelers. It is similar to JR Pass.

How to use it wisely?

First of all, let’s look at the original cost of general expressways:
NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT → Sapporo, one way 1,410 JPY (46.9 km)
NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT → Otaru one, way 2,220 JPY (77.6 km)
NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT → Asahikawa, one way 4,730 JPY (164.6 km)
NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT → Hakodate, one way 5,430 JPY (233.1 km)

And the cost for the Hokkaido Expressway Pass :
(This is only a part of the pricing table, for more details please check the URL below)
http://www.driveplaza.com/trip/drawari/hokkaido_expass/tw.html)
2 DAYS → 3600 yen JPY
3 DAYS → 5100 yen JPY
4 DAYS → 6200 yen JPY
5 DAYS → 6700 yen JPY
6 DAYS → 7200 yen JPY
7 DAYS → 7700 yen JPY

In conclusion, Hokkaido Expressway Pass is recommended if you want to visit several different parts of Hokkaido since the public transportation is not very convenient. But if you only want to spend time in Sapporo or Otaru area then you won’t need Hokkaido Expressway Pass.

We hope this article helps! For further information please contact us directly!

——By NO Brainer

2. Hokkaido Expressway Pass (簡稱HEP)

[INSURANCE FOR RENTAL CAR IN HOKKAIDO]

Driving in snow is not easy for those who is not used to it. It is dangerous, and car insurance is highly recommended upon rentiling a car.
The basic coverage of insurance includes these 4 parts:

① Injuries and deaths to people other than drivers/passengers
② Damages and loss to properties of other than drivers/passengers
③ Damages to vehicles to rent
④ Injuries and dealths to drivers and passengers

Rental car companies have their own insurance systems. Yet some companies have similar systems. Here is an example of a rental car company:

[Basic Package]
When accident occurs, you will have to pay at least

50,000 JPY (compensation for damage of the third-party’s properties)
+50,000 JPY (compensation for damage to the rental car)
+20,000~100,000 JPY NOC (Non Operation Charge) depending the duration where a vehicle is out of service
------------------
120,000~200,000 JPY *not taxable

[Safety Package]
When accident occurs, you will only have to pay the NOC (Non Operation Charge) 20,000 JPY to 100,000 JPY *not taxable

Category1*: 1,000 per day, compared to Basic Package the max amount of charges decreases compared to down to 50,000 when accidents occur.
(*Prices per-day depends on the category of the vehicle)

[Super Safety Package]
This is the most recommended insurance package because there is no excess amount even in an accident.
The insurance company will cover most of the damages.

Category*1: 2,000 per day, then the max $$$ decreases down to 0 when accidents occur.
(*Prices per-day depends on the category of the vehicle)

The price differs depends on the rental car company and the car type. Please contact to NOBrainer for more details.

—— By NO Brainer

先来讲讲什么是NOC(non operation charge)。

0财物损坏赔偿 + 0车辆损坏赔偿 + NOC(租车公司营业损失费)
