寒天「Kanten」＝Agar
Iwamura and Yamaoka in the southern part of Ena City are the largest producers of Hosokanten in Japan. Seaweed is a raw material for agar. Why are agars made in mountain towns far from the sea? It is thanks to the climate of this region, which has a lot of fine weather and a large difference in temperature. It is warm during the day and cold at night. It is possible to dry it for days and freeze it repeatedly, so to speak, the agar by the power of the sun and ice. The scenery where the agar shines white in the rice field where rice cultivation has ended is a winter feature of this region.

恵那市の南部、岩村・山岡は細寒天の生産量日本一です。寒天の原材料は海藻。なぜ海から遠い山間の町で寒天が作られるのか。それは晴天が多く、寒暖の差が大きいこの地域の気候のおかげです。昼間温かく、夜冷える。何日も干しては凍らせることを繰り返す、いわば、太陽と氷の力で寒天はできるのです。稲作の終わった田んぼに寒天が白く光る風景はこの地域の冬の風物詩です。

「Sakaori Tanada」

Tanada=terraced rice field
A small rice field that stretches like scales on a steep slope.
The hand-stacked stone walls represent the wisdom and hardships of our ancestors who increased rice yields as much as possible.

Slow stay in Nenoue Highland.

Nenoue Highland locates in middle south part of Nakatsugawa-Ena region, and highland attitude around 700m.

There are two small lakes, accommodations host warmly, various vegetations, and has walking routs feels relaxing.
Amakanma Lodge is one of accommodation good for long-slow stay, serves local cuisines and local infos - nature, food, history, guide, etc.

We are recommending also short one day stay for refreshing in daily life as well as ‘workation’ under the present situation.

Region of vegetation biodiversity.

Mr. Masao Takamizu is the guide knows well and maintains various micro-vegetation in Nakatsugawa-Ena region, which has many heirloom plants and 4,000 of varieties.

Nakatsugawa-Ena is located in middle of Japan. And you can see various varieties from Northern to Southern of Japan, flat-ground to Subalpine’s, through guide experiences such as Mr. Takamizu doing.

高水正夫さんは、中津川・恵那地域の4,000種にも及ぶ微細な植生や、在来種について熟知し、保全しているガイドです。

中津川・恵那地域は日本の中部に位置し、高水さんのガイドなどを通して、南から北、平地から亜高山帯までの植生を楽しむことができます。
