Once a year, the sky over Mojiko lights up like you’ve never seen before. 🎆

The Kanmon Kaikyō Fireworks Festival is one of a kind, the only display in Japan launched from both sides of a strait, with Mojiko and Shimonoseki firing 18,000 fireworks across 600m of water. It falls every 13 August during Obon, when families welcome their ancestors’ spirits home.

Nearly 800,000 people come to watch, so:

• No free spots — tickets from ~¥1,100 in advance

Fugu, the famous Japanese pufferfish, is a prized winter delicacy you can enjoy right in Mojiko — served as tessa (paper-thin sashimi) or in a warming fuguchiri hotpot. Only chefs with years of licensed training may prepare it, which is part of its legend.

Locals often call it fuku, a play on 福, meaning “good fortune.” And Shimonoseki, Japan’s home of fugu, is just a short ferry ride across the strait.

Cast off into Hakata Bay!

Meet Almare Marine, a fishing charter departing from Meinohama Port in Fukuoka. Captain Toshihide Yamaguchi takes guests out onto the Genkai Sea for a day on the water — tachiuo (beltfish), squid, sea bream or light jigging, depending on the season.

Current (Beachside Cafe in Itoshima)

Sun, sand, and a seriously good lunch.
Tucked along the coast in Itoshima, Current is the kind of beachside cafe that makes you want to linger all afternoon. We stopped by for their daily lunch (¥2,800) and it did not disappoint.

The appetizer plate alone was worth the trip — Spanish omelet, fresh salad, goya fritto with tomato sauce, ham, squid ink rice croquette, and a juicy slice of watermelon to finish it off.

For the main, a choice between tender pork stew or sautéed salmon — both comforting, both beautifully done. And the real showstopper? Free-flow croissants and bread, warm and delicious enough to keep going back for seconds (and thirds).
Add in that laid-back Itoshima beach view, and you’ve got the perfect long lunch spot.

The white torii at Sakurai Futamigaura, framing the Meoto Iwa, the “married rocks” joined by a sacred rope out at sea. It’s one of Itoshima’s most loved spots, and for good reason.

A tip if you’re planning a visit: come early. It’s popular, and the quiet light of the morning is when the view is at its best, before the crowds arrive.

You’ll find it along the coast in Itoshima, just west of Fukuoka City. Let show you the corners of Kyushu worth slowing down for.
