There is a little bar hidden away in the old port town of Mojiko, Kyushu, that we think you need to know about.

Behind the bar is Shuu-san. PCT thru-hiker, founder of , and one of the warmest hosts you will find anywhere in Japan. The walls are covered in trail maps and hiking stickers. The shelves are full of mountain books. And whether you walk in as a solo traveller, a seasoned backpacker, or someone who just followed the warm glow of the window, you will feel at home from the moment you sit down.

This is exactly the kind of place we love introducing our guests to.

The Poppy Festival in Kyushu was a charming local celebration during Golden Week. It was delightful to listen to the buzzing of bees while children enjoyed themselves amidst the flower fields, creating a serene atmosphere.

For those interested in experiencing similar events firsthand, KyushuJourneys can assist in arranging an ideal journey off the beaten path, tailored to your preferences for local happenings.

Connoisseurs tea shop, Fukuoka city. Memorable slow food (actually slow drink) experience. Tea profiles and English menu. Highly recommended.

Moo had Mariko newly harvested, me (Simon) had gyokoro - the undisputed royalty of Japanese green teas.

🚵‍♀️🥾 Exploring Mount A*o 🌋

This week, our licensed guide Mitsuko and our intern Lovisa enjoyed a mountain bike tour and a short hike in the beautiful A*o area, located in the heart of Kyushu.

🌿 Highlights of A*o:
• One of the world’s largest volcanic calderas
• Amazing grassland landscapes and panoramic views
• Perfect area for hiking and cycling adventures
• Home of the famous Akaushi beef

After the tour, we stopped for lunch at A*obo no Sato Kugino and enjoyed delicious local beef 🍖✨

A perfect day full of nature, adventure, and local food with Kyushu Journeys!

In the mood for some nature? 🌿✨
If you have a full day, the Mt. Fukuchi (福智山 — Fukuchiyama) summit trek is an incredible insight into Kyushu's wild side. This 8-hour round trip follows the Nanaenotaki (七重o滝) trail past seven waterfalls.
Forest Finds (Early May):
• Silver Dragon — Ginryoso (銀竜草): A ghostly white plant (not a mushroom!) that siphons energy from fungi. 👻🌱
• Cobra Lily — Tennansho (天南星): A poisonous plant that looks like a snake. Look, but don’t touch! 🐍🚫
• Liver Mushroom — Kanzoutake (肝臓茸): A fungus that looks like raw meat and "bleeds" red juice. 🥩🍄
• Fringed Iris — Shaga (射干): Delicate purple clones that only grow in damp, shady spots. 🌸
• Land Snail — Tsumuri: Even the locals are out enjoying the waterfall mist! 🐌
The Details:
• Time: 8-hour round trip.
• Difficulty: Hard (steep & rocky).
• Location: Kitakyushu Nature Recreation Forest (北九州自然休養林).

📍 Location: Kawachi Wisteria Garden, Kitakyushu.
🎟️ Tickets: You CANNOT buy tickets at the gate. Buy them in advance at a Japanese convenience store (Loppi/FamiPort).
🚌 Access: Shuttle buses run from JR Yahata Station during peak season.
💡 Tip: Go at 8:00 AM to beat the crowds!
🌸 Best Time: The most vibrant colors are usually from April 20th to May 5th.
📸 Photography Tip: The tunnels are 100m long, so use a wide-angle lens (0.5x) to capture the full „dripping“ flower effect!

Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are incredible cities, but they’ve become busier than ever. With millions of visitors following the “golden route,” it can feel impossible to slow down and take it all in.

If you’re looking for the real Japan, away from the crowds, Kyushu is waiting for you. Here you’ll find breathtaking scenery, unforgettable food, and experiences that connect you with the culture in a truly authentic way. Best of all, you’ll be welcomed by some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

We may be biased as Kyushu’s biggest fans, but this island really does have it all.
