The Ishibu Rice Terraces are man-made with an amazing view of Matsuzaki and the Suruga Bay. In May the rice fields are illuminated by candlelight so it’s a must-see if you’re in the area!

Similar to the Maboroshi Hakurankai, the Ayashii Shonen Shojo Hakubutsukan is among the strangest museums I’ve ever visited. With collections varying from retro toys to yokai (Japanese spirits), it’s something you definitely don’t want to miss!

If you’re looking for something weird to do when it rains, Maboroshi Hakurankai is the perfect place to visit. Set in what seems to be a converted greenhouse, you’ll find an abundance of collections of all types scattered about the museum. The museum itself is owned by the famous “Sera-chan”, former salaryman, now turned cosplayer, who is definitely worth striking up a conversation with if you speak Japanese.

Early sakura season is almost over, which means it’s time for the ume blossoms to bloom and Mishima Taisha is a great place to view them! Being the main shrine for the Izu area, you’ll definitely want to drop by and experience the culture.
(Note: the shrine itself does a big new year festival over the course of the new year period so it can get very busy during this season)

Did you know that winter is actually the best time to see Mt. Fuji? Due to the humidity in summer, it’s actually very difficult to get a glimpse of. One of my favourite viewpoints is Cape Deai, a gorgeous spot along the west coast of Izu. Make sure to drop by near sunset as the whole coastline glows!

Said to be the first hot spring in the Izu Peninsula, Tokko no Yu is very popular with tourists from within Japan and abroad. Unfortunately you can’t take a dip in the spring, however the area is ripe with onsen (hot springs) so why not relax in one of the nearby hotels after exploring?

Rakujuen is a park near Mishima Station with natural spring water flowing directly from Mt. Fuji. It also features a small zoo, amusement area and a history museum. It’s a great place to spend a day out relaxing with family.

After a bit of a break, we’re back with a pretty nature walk. If you’re looking for something relatively easy, with plenty of waterfalls to keep you occupied, then Namesawa Gorge will be right up your street! Might want to avoid it during summer due to the bugs.

Daruma Temple is a small temple on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula, featuring the largest Daruma statue in Japan! Daruma dolls are small objects, usually with both the eyes missing. When you make a wish, fill in one eye. The other eye is only filled when your wish comes true.
