This just in: the city of Kyoto had decided to sunset their popular Bus 1 Day Pass by end of March 2023. The pass offers unlimited rides within one day on the city’s bus system, Kyoto City Bus (KCB), for 700 yen (about US$ 5.45). The city will pull the pass by end of September this year, and passes already purchased are still usable until the deadline next year. The existing Subway & Bus 1 Day Pass (1100 yen) will remain.

Kyoto's buses are quite crowded (at least the lines to the major tourist attractions). At the same time, the city's subway system is less utilized. According to the plan, it should drive passengers to use the subway more and reduce congestion for buses.

Now, this change is realistic and reasonable. Kyoto's government had suffered quite a lot financially, and need ways to bring in more income. For us travelers, losing the Bus 1 Day Pass means you pay a bit more. How would that affect your planning? For starters, you will get a free ride by the fourth bus ride on the bus only pass (230 yen per ride x 4 = 920 yen vs. 700 yen). You only get free rides the subway and bus pass when you after the fifth ride (5 x 220 yen for subway = 1100 yen). Unless you are jampacking your itinerary with locations in different districts, the 1100 yen pass is more difficult to use up.

So is the Subway and Bus pass not worth picking up come next year? Well, it's not that simple. Let's find out in our next post!

Japan Government had finally confirmed the date that foreign tourists can visit Japan again: June 1st.

Only small tour groups are allowed, and who gets to go are based on the COVID situation of the home countries for the participants. Vaccine requirements also determines whether quarantine are required for the participants.

A bit later than most first world countries, but a step forward is better than standing still.

Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio said in a press conference tonight that Japan will have its lockdown relaxed by March 7th. Here are the details:

- Max daily quota for travelers will raise from 3500 to 5000.
- Business purpose and students prioritized, tourist still not accepted.
- Quarantine period will reduce, subject to conditions:
=> Test negative upon arrival required.
=> Quarantine remains 7 days. Yet if the PCR test on the third day is negative, quarantine will be lifted immediately.
=> 3 shots of vaccine received + your country not listed as endemic → no quarantine.

What does it mean for us travelers? We will just have to wait a little longer.

Japan is expected to relax its quarantine period for business travelers to only 3 days. There should be an announcement on this policy by as early as this week and start within this month. Tourists are not eligible for this new policy though.

The current quarantine period is up to 10 days, and the business sector in Japan had been lobbying hard for relaxation.

Five cities in are relaxing their COVID restrictions this week, reported in this news clip. A great sign that the country is finally getting the situation under control. Maybe a prelude to the gradual reopening of borders?

JR West is rebuilding the Hokuriku Shinkansen trains that were lost in the 2019 Autumn typhoon flooding. Thirteen new sets with new features were ordered. They will be gradually added to the existing fleet of trains running between Tokyo and Kanazawa/Tsuruga.

They might look like regular W7 rolling stock, yet there are several improvements. Cabin 7 of each train set will have two more wheelchair slots, bringing the total wheelchair slots to 4. These two new slots will be window seats as well. Extra snow prevention equipment will be added. Luggage storage will be built into the new trains. Finally, some of the sets will have backup power to ensure running water is available in their toilets during external power failure.
