At the end of the year, we had wonderful guests visiting us all the way from Lebanon in the Middle East.
They shared that one of their relatives lives in Tokyo, and they were able to speak a little Japanese as well.
We enjoyed chatting about tea, and they mentioned that matcha—and even hojicha—has become very popular recently.
They clearly have a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, and they were especially delighted when they changed into hakama and samue. Their smiles at that moment were truly memorable.
They prepared matcha themselves and enjoyed both classic matcha and matcha lattes together.
They seemed to have a lovely, relaxed time, savoring each cup.
They also really loved the initial charm attached to their bamboo whisk (chasen), which made the experience feel even more special for them.
It was a joyful and heartwarming moment to share Japanese tea culture with guests who genuinely appreciate it.

🇹🇼 A story from our guests visiting from Taiwan
We recently welcomed three female friends visiting from Taiwan and asked what inspired them to join our matcha experience.
Matcha is very familiar in Taiwan, and they told us they already loved it.
However, after drinking matcha at cafés in Japan, they felt that it tasted completely different—and much more delicious—even though it was still matcha.
When they saw matcha being whisked with a bamboo whisk right in front of them, they wondered:
“Could the way matcha is prepared be what changes the flavor?”
Curious to learn more, they searched for a place where they could be taught properly and found our studio.
While saying, “This is harder than it looks!” and “My arm is getting tired,”
the matcha they carefully whisked themselves turned out to be very delicious.
With bright smiles, they told us,
“It’s even better than a Starbucks matcha latte!”
A truly charming trio and a lovely moment to share 🍵

A Kyoto matcha experience…?
Yesterday, I went to Kyoto Station for the first time in a while.

I decided to take a short break and went into a café—something I don’t usually do.
Since I prepare matcha for myself on a regular basis, it’s not something particularly special to me anymore.

So instead of ordering matcha,
I chose a drink called “strawberry tea”—
a slightly stylish choice (though calling myself a “girl” at this age might be a bit shameless).

At the table in front of me were some lovely young women who seemed to be visiting from out of town.
They ordered what appeared to be matcha lattes.

The color was incredibly green.
At first, I thought,
“Wow, this café even serves green smoothies.”
But it turned out to be matcha.

It was served in a large heat-resistant glass, with a straw.
I couldn’t help wondering which category it belonged to,
but the bold look suggested a powerful caffeine boost.

Maybe this is exactly what you need to keep your energy up while exploring Kyoto.

Watching young people enjoy matcha so casually felt surprisingly interesting to me.

She visited with her mother —
a brilliant doctor from South America, full of energy and curiosity.

They enjoyed whisking matcha together,
chose a natsume to take home,
and were heading next to a beauty expo in Korea.

Matcha is not just tea.
It’s clean, gentle caffeine —
the kind that supports focus, travel, and movement.

Wishing them a vibrant journey ahead. 🍵

A lovely couple from Texas visited our Kyoto Matcha Experience recently.
When I asked whether matcha is popular in Texas, they laughed and said:

“Matcha is trending everywhere in the U.S.—we love it. But in Texas, it’s surprisingly hard to buy real matcha. And if we order online, the bags are huge, almost industrial-sized… and cost more than 40,000 yen.”

They showed me the instructions that came with the American matcha they had purchased.
It said, “Use a large amount for better color and flavor.”
When they read that, they were shocked.

I explained that for authentic Japanese matcha used in tea ceremony:

A light matcha is made with about 3–6 g

A stronger matcha uses 8–10 g

You never need a large amount because true matcha is naturally vibrant and flavorful

They were amazed.
“What is happening with the matcha sold in America?” they asked with an incredulous smile.

At our studio, we use 100% pure, stone-milled Uji matcha, ground slowly by hand-operated mills.
Because the powder is extremely fine and each grain is uniform in weight, it dissolves instantly and creates a smooth, silky froth.
This is completely different from mass-produced “culinary matcha,” which often has uneven particle sizes and requires much more powder to achieve flavor or color.

I told them that our matcha is made specifically for tea ceremony—not for cooking—so it has depth, aroma, body, and a beautiful finish.
Hearing this, they said:

“We had no idea. Now we’re wondering… what have we been drinking all this time in America?”

When they whisked their own bowl of matcha for the first time, their faces lit up.

“This tastes so much better than anything we’ve tried back home. I suddenly feel like a matcha master!”
They laughed proudly while admiring the foam they created.

I completely understand that feeling.
Even I, as a tea instructor, feel that good tools and good matcha make you instantly better—your whisking feels smoother, the aroma lifts beautifully, and you suddenly appreciate the art of making matcha.

They agreed wholeheartedly and said the experience completely changed the way they view matcha.

It was a pleasure welcoming them, and I am grateful that Kyoto became the place where they discovered what real matcha truly tastes like.

In Japan, our classic shortcake always comes with strawberries. For many of us, strawberry shortcake is the Christmas cake.I actually didn’t know until adulthood that in France, people enjoy Bûche de Noël instead… 🤭Today, I visited a charming new pastry shop near my home and paired their strawberry shortcake with a bowl of rich Uji matcha.Surprisingly, matcha pairs beautifully with Western sweets.I especially love enjoying it with canelés or chocolate. In this video, I whisk matcha as a little luxury—a special matcha moment to enjoy shortcake in the most delicious way. From Kyoto, I hope this quiet and relaxing “Matcha Moment” brings a little joy to your day.Enjoy the video! 🍵✨京都の抹茶体験Only 9 min walk from Kyoto Station / 2 min from To-ji Temple Station 📲 English-friendly booking 24/7 via Google or our official site. A Guest from California 🇺🇸—Visiting Kyoto Only for Our Matcha Experience

Today, we welcomed a wonderful guest from California.
She told me that the very first time she discovered matcha was during a previous trip to Japan, when she tried a matcha latte. At that time, she enjoyed it like coffee — without realizing that traditional matcha is made in a completely different way. Once she learned how authentic matcha is whisked, she became curious and wanted to try making it herself.

This time, she is traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto, and then heading to Fukuoka. When I asked if she had visited Kyoto before, she said this was her very first time. She planned to explore the Kyoto Station area a little after the workshop, then continue her journey to Fukuoka.

I was surprised and asked,
“Did you come to Kyoto just for this matcha experience?”
She smiled and said,
“Yes, exactly. Your workshop looked so interesting — that’s why I came.”

She explained that she had researched Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka in detail, but had never been particularly interested in Kyoto’s temples or historical sites. However, when she looked up “matcha in Japan,” Kyoto appeared as the origin of high-quality matcha. That led her to search for a hands-on matcha workshop, and she found our studio near Kyoto Station. It became the perfect stop on her way down to Fukuoka.

On her walk from the station, she noticed the five-story pagoda for the first time and said, “Oh, maybe that’s the famous temple people talk about.”
It was lovely to see Kyoto through her fresh eyes — guided not by sightseeing, but by a genuine curiosity for matcha.

Thank you so much for choosing our small studio as the reason for your first visit to Kyoto.
It was an honor to share the joy of making real matcha with you. 🍵💚

Yesterday, two lovely sisters from Germany visited our Kyoto Matcha Experience.
One is a medical doctor, and the younger sister works in research — both incredibly intelligent, kind, and truly close to each other.

They told me how much they love animals and live with both cats and dogs back home. Although it was their first time making matcha, they already drink it often — but in Germany, matcha is very expensive and surprisingly difficult to find.
They said even if they visit Japanese supermarkets abroad, matcha is not available.

So when they arrived in Japan, they were shocked (in a happy way!) to see matcha cafés on almost every street corner.
“We feel like Japan is full of matcha. We are starving for it in Germany!” they laughed.

At their hotel breakfast buffet, they found a matcha latte at the drink bar and were so happy that they drank three cups in the morning. When I told them to be careful with caffeine, they smiled and said:

“It feels natural and gentle. Matcha doesn’t upset our stomach like coffee. That’s why we love it.”

They enjoy it both with milk and soy milk, and were especially excited to find soy matcha latte in Japan.

Finally, they said they really wanted to make matcha latte themselves — so they started looking for a chasen (bamboo whisk). They had seen a café in Germany whisking matcha and realized it’s impossible without a proper chasen.

While searching online, they found my small studio…
and that is how they ended up here. 🍵✨

It was such a warm, beautiful session.
Thank you both for bringing so much joy into the room yesterday. 💚

yesterday’s matcha guest was a lovely woman who absolutely loves Pokémon—and Japan’s culture.
She told me she had tried a tea ceremony once before, but it was a “drink-only” style.
This was her first time making matcha by herself, and she was so excited.

She adored the whisk with the little charm, and when she noticed our Pikachu in the room, her eyes lit up.
She said she has visited Pokémon Centers many times during her trip.
I’m a Pokémon fan myself, so we ended up exchanging Pokémon GO friend codes and talking like long-lost friends.

When she tried the folding technique for she said it looked complicated—but after a few tries, she got the rhythm beautifully.
Whisking the matcha was harder than she expected, and she laughed, saying:

“My arms are getting tired! This is more workout than I thought!”

She looked truly happy throughout the entire experience, and I’m sure this became a special memory of her time in Japan.

At the end, we always ask guests to sign their name and write their hometown on a small photo card.
When I guessed, “California…?” she looked surprised and said, “Yes! How did you know?”
I told her that many guests from California visit recently—and she laughed when I said it must be my sixth sense.

It felt like spending time with an old friend.
Pokémon really has the power to bring strangers closer in just a moment.
Today turned into a wonderfully warm and memorable day.
