Japan has made a historic revision to its Imperial House Law, the first substantive change to the law since it took effect in 1947. The reform is aimed at addressing the shrinking number of members in Japan’s Imperial Family and the long-term succession problem. (Mainichi⁠)

Under the new rules, male-line descendants of the 11 former Imperial Family branches that lost their royal status after World War II may be adopted into the Imperial Family. Japan has received its first Canadian crude oil cargo in more than a year, as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz push Asian energy buyers to diversify their oil supplies.

The Freedom Glory, a Marshall Islands-flagged Aframax tanker capable of carrying up to 750,000 barrels, loaded Canadian crude shipped through the Trans Mountain pipeline from Vancouver and headed for Japan. The cargo was purchased by ENEOS, Japan’s largest oil refiner, while ExxonMobil chartered the vessel.

The shipment represents a significant change in Japan’s crude-supply strategy. Japan has historically relied heavily on Middle Eastern oil, with more than 90% of its crude imports previously moving through the Strait of Hormuz. With shipping disruptions affecting the region, Japanese refiners are looking toward alternative suppliers such as Canada.

The Canadian oil was transported from Alberta to Vancouver through the Trans Mountain pipeline, giving Canada direct access to Pacific markets. Asian destinations accounted for around 77% of Vancouver’s oil exports in 2026, up significantly from 2024.

The cargo was scheduled to arrive at ENEOS’s Kiire terminal in Kagoshima, highlighting the growing importance of Canada as an alternative energy supplier for Japan and other Asian countries.
