Happy New Year, everyone! Here's hoping you had a restful holiday, and hoping that we're able to welcome international guests soon.

NEOLD Private House was decked out with traditional Japanese decorations for the new year, the biggest of which are these displays called 'kadomatsu'. They are made of pine and bamboo, and are temporary homes for gods in the new year in hopes of being blessed with a bountiful harvest. After the 15th of January, they are then burnt to release the gods.

If you ever visit Japan during the New Year, you'll find these little snowman-esque mochi topped with an orange outside houses or being sold in supermarkets. No, they're not Japan's version of snowmen, but offerings called 'kagami mochi' (mirror rice cake).

These offerings are typically displayed on the 28th, and cracked open to be eaten on New Year's Day, in a traditional soup called ozoni.

One of the great things about tempura is the variety - you can basically tempura-fy anything, and the light, crisp batter makes it all the more better. Also, vegetable tempura is completely vegan, making it a great option for those with dietary restrictions!
