📍 Save The Cat Hida, Gifu Prefecture

😻 If you’re a cat lover, then this is undoubtedly the place for you! 😻

Located in the picturesque town of Hida Furukawa, Save The Cat Hida is a cat rescue group that encourages people to adopt and don’t shop for their next furry family member.

The shelter is currently home to over 40 cats looking for their forever homes. Amongst the cats are those who were left abandoned, found on the street or their owners were unable to continue taking care of them due to age or health reasons.

For a donation of 500 yen or more, you can hang out with all the cats - yes, that’s right! All 40 of them!

As well as spending some time with these cuties, it’s also a great way to get to know the cats if you’re looking to adopt - or maybe a cat (or two) might choose you instead 🐈

📍Oshima Tsumugimura, Amami Oshima (Kagoshima)

Kagoshima is crafty, and it’s time we talked about it!

When we say crafty, we’re not talking about papier maché and trinkets. We’re talking about the incredible Oshima Tsumugi, a type of patterned silk that requires many steps and a team of workers to create.

The craft has been going for over 1,000 years, and to this day still uses some of the traditional methods that have been developed over the years, such as mud-dyeing. This natural dyeing process results in deep blues and blacks, and is combined with serious skill to create intricate patterns.

The entire process can be seen at Oshima Tsumugimura, and you can even try parts of it for yourself, such as mud-dyeing. So take a stroll through their gardens, learn a little bit about the craft, and come away with a new-found appreciation for Oshima Tsumugi.
