Another set of great people visiting Hokkaido from all corners of the world and enjoying the wilderness here. Also had the privilege of enjoying a day out in the forest and alpine marshlands with Kevin from who generously took some great footage of the surrounding landscape with his drone. It’s a pleasure to meet other locals who appreciate and enjoy the outdoors here.

One of the best mountain huts in Hokkaido in all seasons. The wood stove tends to leak smoke and the chimney needs sealing, but at the end of a solid hike and climb it is a haven and a cherished spot for many locals. A place of solitude and peace for all those who respect the mountains and forests here.

Up to Soranumadake today with awesome company and great weather. A few fellow hikers enjoying the trails and as always meeting the locals on the way is always a pleasure.

Great day attacking the Usubetsu Route up Muine dake. Awesome weather today with temperatures in the upper 20’s and a light breeze. Clear skies and dry trails.

Well, the Miyama-matatabi (mountain kiwi fruit) or Kokuwa (コクワ) as it’s commonly known is starting to fruit. Not long before they ripen and a trail feast will be served. There was plenty of bear activity on the Motoyama Route up to Muinedake today as seen in these pictures. They had even found a native bee hive and had dug into it to feast on the honey. The weather was starting to get unsettled as I reached the top ridge with thunder rumbling across the subalpine plateau. So I made the call and head back at the 1250 metre elevation mark. The mountain will be there tomorrow, no need to invite a lightning strike!
