One of Hokkaido’s most special holes: The 5th hole on the Pirika Course at Nidom Classic in Tomakomai.

This par 5 has a river meandering through it, forcing players to hit onto “islands” before reaching the green at last. Wow!

What a fantastic tour with Steve San: 8 rounds of golf on 8 consecutive days!

It was a golf road trip including a variety of courses around Sapporo, Niseko and the Nidom Classic Course in Tomakomai.

We also visited local markets, waterfalls, went golf shopping and eating our way across Hokkaido’s gourmet offerings.

Accommodation was also superb, with the highlight being the overnights at an amazing traditional ryokan with kaiseki dinners.

Thank you Steve San, I’m looking forward to doing it again next year!

We often spot wildlife while playing in Hokkaido, with deer being quite common as they search out open areas outside of the dense forests.

Other common wildlife spotted on Hokkaido’s golf courses include foxes, snakes, birds & kites, and a tanuki raccoon-dog if you’re lucky.

Interestingly, we rarely see brown bear s**t or bear prints along the courses. Perhaps the loud sounds of balls being crushed into fairways and mowers maintaining the grass keeps them at bay.

The Niseko Village Course at the Hilton is one to savor for the majestic views, interesting course layout - including a 704 yard par 6 and another green nearly surrounded by water - and quality facilities.

The course is lined by managed forest with wide spaces between, feeling more like a links course than the woodland it is.

English here is widely spoken, so it also a great option for those concerned about language barriers.

What a great tour in stunning course & weather conditions with the 7 Ladies from Australia.

We played uncrowded rounds at Ittatsu International, Rusutsu 72, Hanazono & Niseko Village golf courses.

Not a drop of rain. Hardly any other players. 20 degrees with light breezes. And of course, some great shots to keep us all coming back again and again and again.

Aside from golf, we visited Lake Shikotsu, a birdwatching cafe, had kaiseki dinners in Kimonos, dipped in onsens, savoured pure water from the base of Mt. Yotei, indulged at a dairy farm, and of course, did plenty of shopping.

Thank you to all the ladies! It was a blessing to have guided you on your golf tour, and I look forward to playing more golf with you all one day soon!

A happy 55th BDay to the one & only Shabba, who found the perfect place to celebrate at Gold Sapporo CC with the golf crew.

Unfortunately, he didn’t hit his age, and no hole-in-ones either: maybe next year the miracles will drop.

Or maybe it’s never about the miracles. Maybe it’s about the missed shots and the gentle recoveries, the feeling of a perfect drive when the sun shines, or the pangs of a missed 3 footer. It’s all part of the beautiful game.
