Several hours after M7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, emergency response efforts continue across Kyushu as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.

Latest updates (as of July 29):
🚄 The Kyushu Shinkansen remains heavily disrupted.
• Service between Hakata and Kumamoto has been suspended from the first train of the day.
• Service between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo has been suspended for the entire day.
• The Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo-Onsen–Nagasaki) is expected to operate normally.

🚉 Several limited express and local train services around Kumamoto have also been suspended or are operating with reduced service.

✈️ Most airlines plan to resume operations though some delays and cancellations may continue.

🛣️ Road closures and infrastructure inspections remain in place in affected areas.

🚒 Search and rescue operations continue as emergency teams respond across the region.

🏠 Evacuation shelters remain open for displaced residents.

🌊 The tsunami advisory has been lifted, but authorities continue to warn of strong aftershocks in the coming days.

What began as an ordinary day quickly turned into one of the strongest earthquakes to strike southern Japan in recent years.

Here’s what we know so far:
• A M7.1 earthquake struck at 4:27 PM JST, with a maximum intensity 7.
• Multiple people are reportedly trapped following an explosion at Aeon Mall Kumamoto, with rescue operations ongoing.
• A factory chimney collapsed in Yatsushiro City, while multiple fires have been reported across Kumamoto.
• Sections of Kumamoto Castle’s historic stone walls have collapsed.
• Major roads have cracked and buckled, with bridge damage forcing multiple expressway closures.
• More than 41,000 households remain without electricity, with water, gas and mobile communication outages reported.
• Emergency shelters have opened as authorities continue search and rescue efforts.

⚠️ Experts warn that strong aftershocks may continue for the next 2–3 days, and another major quake cannot yet be ruled out.
