On August 17, 2019, I took part in an event for the Setouchi Triennale 2019. It was the "Making a coaster by 'Cho-sh*tsu'", or carved lacquer. For the past 2 editions, the Setouchi Triennale has had a food art event that I have loved and with the 2019 Triennale, I had to go to the next one as well. EAT&ART TARO is the "artist" who is a combination of chef and artist that works to educate people about the local foods of the regions. In 2013, he made island soups for each season of the Triennale. Naoshima is the most famous art island in the Setouchi Triennale. While you can visit at anytime during the year, it can be wonderful to visit during the Triennale if you have the time. Most of the artwork is centred in 3 areas, the Miyanoura area where the main port is situated; Honmura, a small village between the main port and the Benesse area; and the Benesse House Area. Oshima is a beautiful island with limited artwork. There are 3 tours to the island each day during the Triennale. These are not optional but they are a wealth of information on Hansen’s disease and how people in Japan were treated. Ogijima is a small island with a small community. The area is small enough that it can be considered a single area but it is split into two distinct geographical sections. The main “Community Area” is Ogicho and has most of the art. Most of the art opens at 9:30, 30 minutes after the first ferry arrives.
