【高度成長期以前】
かつて非常に水質のよい湖であり、江戸期には琵琶湖や河口湖から蜆が放流され漁業も行われていた。
しかし、戦後の高度経済成長期にかけて工業排水、生活排水などにより湖の富栄養化が進み、水質が悪化した。

【70年代以降】
アオコが大発生し湖面が緑色になり、悪臭が漂い発泡するなどといった環境悪化が見られた。

【近年】
近年は市民や行政が積極的に水質改善に取り組んだ結果、現在では大幅に水質が改善されているものの、かつての姿を取り戻すまでには至っていない。
