(English below) 秋に蒔いた小麦の芽が出てきた畑にこんなにたくさんのタンチョウ！念の為ここは釧路ではなく網走です😍…..畑には、これから釧路湿原に飛んでいくタンチョウや飛来してきたオオハクチョウが見られ、そしてそろそろヒシクイもやって来る。バードウォッチャーは目が離せなくなるね☺️

In case you didn’t know, I can talk to the birds. I’d asked them to assemble here to meet my guests😜….In a month they’ll be flying away to the feeding places in Kushiro Wetland to spend winter there……And in turn the bean goose will be flying in here😊

(English below) 6月になったから、小清水原生花園をチェックしに行かなくちゃ！と、かなりの仕事モードで行ってきました。車で20分。エゾキスゲが咲き始めてるー！クロユリもー！ハマナスもー！ディスプレイフライトを披露するオオジシギも、双眼鏡で追えて楽しい朝活でした。（最後の写真は、小清水原生花園を知らない人のために。去年の8月。海岸沿いの砂丘。こういう所なのよ✨🌼）

Koshimizu Wild Flower Preserve is one of the many wild flower conservation parks in eastern Hokkaido. I drove there first thing this morning to check on how the summer flowers were doing😊 Yellow Day-Lilies were starting to bloom along with the Kamchatka Lilies. Even the bright Rosa Ragusa, Japanese wild roses, were opening up their buds🌹 On top of that, I was really content and happy to follow with my own eyes the display flight of Latham’s snipe, the bird that flies 6000km from Australia to mate in Hokkaido😍 I hope the last picture helps to share with you how refreshing it is to take a walk here!!

(English below) 買い物に行く時、なるべく歩くようにしている。クルマ社会への反発、さらなる老後に備えて脚力を養うため、運動を兼ねて。理由は色々。中でも、初春の網走川のカモ観察は、楽しみ！飛び立つ前のカモチェック。去年は12種見た。今年はまだ少ない。双眼鏡も住宅が立ち並ぶ中だと、なかなか配慮が必要で難しい😓

I like walking. There’s always something in the trees or river or at the harbor that catches my eyes. “Counting ducks” at Abashiri River just before they fly off is one of my favorite early spring activity😁 Last year I found 12 kinds of ducks. Haven’t got to that number yet.

（English below）日曜日は天気も良くて、双眼鏡をぶら下げてテクテクウォーキングをしていたら、今年最初の福寿草を見つけた🌼 ふきのとうも随分と生えてきたもンだ👀 取ってきて蕗味噌作りたいんだけれど、キツネのおしっことかモロモロ考え始めると、なかなか手が伸びないのだ。悩ましい😕

In Abashiri the small yellow blossoms of Adonis are the first flower to bloom in spring. And here they are finally! I found them on Sunday while walking in the neighborhood. As their Chinese characters read (福寿草) they symbolize good fortune and longevity. The best flower to start a new (fiscal) year🌼 Together were these butterbur buds - Fuki plant buds. We love to pick them and cook them as tempura or chop them and then stir fry with a little bit of miso. Their slightly bitter taste is an early spring delicacy🥰 I use Fuki design on my business card since their strong presence in Hokkaido fascinated me when I first came here.

(English below) 先週撮った写真だけれど、春の風物詩:: 雪解けの進んだ麦畑で、オオハクチョウが雪の下から顔を出した青い芽を盛んに啄んでいました。うん？小ぶりの白鳥も混ざっているけれど、コハクチョウもいるのかな？！珍しい。白鳥の後ろには、これから北に帰るヒシクイもいて（📸2枚目）、春だなあ☀️🌱🦢🦆🩷

I’ve been pretty lazy lately so these are pictures I took last week😅 Whooper swans (and some tundra swans?) were pecking on the young green wheat sprouts that showed up from the melting snow at the wheat fields. I know these swans irritate the wheat farmers, but it’s also a symbol of early spring in eastern Hokkaido…that I really love❤️ BTW, the flock of birds in the back (📸 #2) are bean goose - ready to fly back to the north.

(English below) ワタシの「雪国の農家に春が来たなあ」風景。北見市周辺の畑には、融雪剤（炭酸カルシウム＋炭）が散布されていました。これが太陽の熱の吸収を促進するらしい。🚜が通った後が綺麗な筋模様になっていていて、目を惹く❣️（5-6枚目は、先日NHKのローカルニュースで流れていた散布風景だけれど…すごい👀‼️）

Definitely one of my top 3 favorite “farm arts” and the sign of spring-is-almost-here🥰The grayish lines on the snow white crop fields are snow-melting agent that was recently spread. It’s a mixture of calcium carbonate and coal powder. I see this every year, and each year I can’t help admiring how beautifully the lines are drawn😂 (the last 2 picture are from a local news program. This is how they spread it!😵)

(English below) 網走の港で開催された野鳥の会の探鳥会の後、冒険を探しにやってきた止別川（やんべつがわ）なのですが…人も車も通らない静けさで、鳥たちをそっとしてあげたくなり、さっさと引き上げました。

Came to explore Yanbetsu River (about 30 minutes drive from home) after a bird watching gathering at Abashiri Port. But it was such a calm and peaceful area - like a sanctuary for the wild birds❣️ Not a place for my adventures - no bothering them🦢🦅🐦‍⬛🦆

(English below) この時期のナナカマドの木。網走では街路樹や公園など至る所に植っている。赤い実が白い雪に映えて、ワタシ的には冬の風物詩❤️キレンジャク？がよく実をつついているけれど、飛び立つのが素早い！故に写真なし。
最後の2枚はナナカマドじゃないけれど、冬の木の実❤️🖤

Japanese Rowan trees give off the perfect “winter look” in the snow❣️ The “waxtail birds”, probably, come to eat their red berries, but I can never get to take pictures of them, they fly away too fast!
The last 2 pictures aren’t Japanese Rowan trees, but nice pictures of winter berries🥰
