Sail the Tadami River with the help of a local ferryman… 🚣‍♂️

Deep in the Oku-Aizu region of Fukushima, this ethereal ferry ride is especially popular in summer, when the river is often shrouded in mist in the early hours of the morning. During our trip, we went slightly later, but we were still treated to beautiful crystal blue waters and the stunning scenery of the Mugenkyo valley around us.

The ferry boat is modeled after the ones used by local people to cross the river many generations ago! Nowadays it’s a relaxing pastime for people looking to reconnect with nature in a charming locale.

After your trip, soak in a hot spring nearby, with the outdoor bath at Tsuru no Yu a popular option, or refresh at the Tsuruno Iori Café, which offers ice cream and light lunches.

A festival where samurai do battle with a dragon on the waters of Lake Numazawa…

Held on the first weekend of August every year, the Lake Numazawa Festival is one of the best events of the summer in Fukushima thanks to its beautiful locale and unique main event. Re-enacting the legend told for generations, the local people of Kaneyama don samurai armour and sail out to face the great serpent.

This year I combined the lake festival with a trip to the Higashiyama Onsen Bon Odori festival in Aizu, but you could also head to Fukushima City and see the Waraji Festival on the same weekend! There’s no shortage of options for summer festivals, which usually involve food stalls, fireworks and a carnival atmosphere.

Although it’s busy during festival season, Lake Numazawa is also a great camping option! Visitors often choose it for its pristine waters and secluded location in the mountains. Or you could also do the Mugenkyo valley ferry ride from here, with the dock just 10mins down the road.

Four nights of dancing with geisha in a hot spring town…

The Higashiyama Onsen Bon Odori, a traditional summer dance festival, restarted in 2024 after a five-year absence and was held again 1-4 August this year.

People came from all over the prefecture to join the dancing, which snakes around a 14-metre watchtower, covered in over 1,000 lanterns, where the band plays the song ‘Aizu Bandaisan’. The dance is only a few steps, meaning anyone of any age can join the line and get involved. There’s also an array of food stalls and seating if you get tired…

The hot spring town of Higashiyama Onsen is a beautiful locale only a ten-minute drive from the centre of Aizu-Wakamatsu City and worth a visit in any season. Why not stay at an old ryokan here while you’re exploring the samurai history of the Aizu region?

Children perform the traditional art of kabuki on rolling stalls every summer in Minami-Aizu, as one of the main events of the Aizu-Tajima Gion Festival.

There are four floats, one for each main district of the town. The stall of the west district is the oldest, dating back as far as the 1700s!

In the interlude between scenes, local children queue up to ride the float of their area, carried through the streets at pace by their parents and neighbours. Older children take turns to call out the festival chant ‘Oonsan yarekakero’ – translating roughly as an order to ‘PUSH’ to their team – which is then echoed by the younger ones riding at the front of the stall.

We’re recruiting samurai for this September’s Aizu Festival! ⚔️ Here are some ideas for activities you can try in the samurai city…

The historic Aizu-Wakamatsu has a rich samurai heritage stretching back to the Aizu Domain clan of samurai, which ruled the region from its fortress of Tsurugajo Castle. Visitors can experience samurai culture for themselves in a number of different ways, from September’s samurai festival to swordsmanship workshops.

1. The Aizu Festival will be held on 19-21 September this year, with the main parade taking place on Sat. 20th. And you can walk the historic streets yourself as a samurai! Learn more:

2. Learn the techniques of Shimaguchi Tetsuro, master swordsman and choreographer, with classes taking place at the Ookawaso ryokan dojo in Ashinomaki Onsen.

3. Tsurugajo Castle is not only a visually stunning sight, but there’s also a museum inside the sprawling keep, telling the story of the Aizu Domain and its battle against imperial forces in 1868.

4. The Nisshinkan samurai academy was the elite educational institution of its time, training young warriors in martial arts, philosophy and academia. You can see where young samurai would have studied, eaten and trained, and try your hand at kyudo, Japanese archery.

Experience a traditional Japanese summertime scene at Kunitama Shrine in Iwaki ☀️🎐

This old Shinto shrine is said to have existed since the year 806, with the current worship hall dating back to 1942. In summer, the shrine grounds are decorated with over 1,500 wind chimes, creating a massive sound not dissimilar to the classic summertime sound of cicadas.

The display is connected to ‘Natsumode’, a summer visit to the shrine to give thanks for making it halfway through the year, and praying for peace in the months to come. The programme runs until August 17, and tomorrow, July 12, the shrine will hold a special illumination event from 7.00pm to 8.30pm.

Step into a dreamy world of color at the Umbrella Sky of Inawashiro Herb Garden, where 740 vibrant umbrellas fill the ceiling and walls. Reflected perfectly on the water-covered floor, the entire scene becomes a surreal photo spot that can be enjoyed in any season. The installation is a must-see during your trip to Fukushima - especially for anyone looking to take memorable photos!

While you're there, don't miss the chance to explore the massive herb garden outside or check out seasonal floral art displays inside. The garden is a sprawling outdoor space over 100,000 square metres wide, with around 500 varieties of herbs, flowers, and plants, including lavender, mint, sunflowers, cosmos, and kochia, depending on the season.

The nearby Hotel Listel Inawashiro - a short walk from the garden - is a great option for exploring the Inawashiro area, and even has a ski resort on site (Listel Ski Fantasia) if you’re visiting in winter.

🌼 25,000 flowers at Yorinji Temple… 🌼

Designated a historic site by Fukushima City, Yorinji Temple is famous not only as a cherry blossom spot but for its abundance of flowers. It’s said there are over 20,000 anabells and 5,000 hydrangeas, making it a popular place to visit during its blooming season (typically mid-June to early July).

The purification well here is also full of beautiful flowers from the area and watched over by small o-jizo-san - stone statues of a Buddhist deity said to protect children. Larger statues also dot the grounds of the temple, wearing traditional red caps and bibs; these are usually gifts offered by locals as a way of showing respect.

There is a cafe on the grounds which sells gluten-free pizza 🍕 made on-site, and a trip to the south of Fukushima City pairs well with seeing the Tired Gundam, a short five minute drive away.

Almost summertime in Fukushima… ☀️

This year we’ll be bringing you information about summer scenic spots, recommendations for things to do, as well as highlighting some of the best summer festivals. What would you like to see from our channel in summer 2025? Let us know with a comment or DM!

Despite its spot at the base of Tohoku, parts of Fukushima in summer can reach temperatures as high as 39 degrees 🥵 But the mountainous regions like Inawashiro or coastal areas like Iwaki usually stay much cooler, and we’ll be sharing more information about them later in the summer!

This spot is a stretch of farmland in Minami-Fukushima, south of the main city, and just down the road from my best friend, the Tired Gundam.
