At Yasukuni Shrine today doing research for my newest tour on the rise of fascism and memory of WW2 in Japan. Yasukuni is one of the most controversial places in Japan, due to it being a shrine dedicated to the spirits of more than 2,000,000 men and women who died in the name of the Emperor--including those who were convicted of war crimes. This is perhaps best summed up in the existence there of a statue honoring the kamikaze pilots who sacrificed their lives in a desperate attempt to destroy American ships at the end of the war.
