It begins with the chant. Low and steady, one voice answering another, building around the fire until the whole line is moving in time. Then a moran steps into the middle and goes up.

You've been out since mid-afternoon. The light's gone gold, then softer, and the Land Cruiser pulls up on a rise where the plains open all the way to the escarpment.

Chairs are already set. There's a bottle chilling in the bucket, glasses catching what's left of the sun, a lantern lit against the cool coming in.

Someone from Lodo hands you a drink and steps back so your guide can point out what you're looking at a distant herd on the move, a bird you've not seen before, the way the wind runs through the grass.

There's a waterhole in Lumo Conservancy where zebra gather to drink. They arrive in loose groups, line up along the water's edge, and lower their heads in near-perfect unison. It looks choreographed. It isn't. It's survival instinct refined over millennia, and as we witness it three metres from the vehicle, every nature documentary you've ever seen lands differently.

You come to Amboseli expecting elephant against Kilimanjaro. And you'll get that. It's hard not to. But some of the best moments here are the ones nobody warned you about. A spotted hyena sitting in the shallows, staring straight at your vehicle like it's been waiting for you. Two more wading through the swamp with flamingo stretched across the water behind them. No drama. No chase. Animals doing what they do in one of Kenya's most underrated ecosystems. We run regular trips through Amboseli and it surprises us every time.
