Breakfast, but with the whole of the plains for a dining room.

After the morning drive, the team sets up somewhere quiet: a table in the grass, hot food off the pan, coffee poured fresh, and a view that goes on for miles. No walls, no rush to be anywhere. You sit, you eat, and every so often you look up because something moved out on the plain.

This is one of those touches that turns a good safari into a proper one.

Some days on safari go exactly like this.

You head out early while the plains are still quiet, zebra grazing through the dry grass, hills blue on the horizon. You find a cheetah, then a second, both sizing you up from the long grass. And when the light starts to drop, you pull up somewhere with a view, wrap a blanket over your knees, and raise a glass as the day winds down.

The bush and the beach are two different holidays, and Kenya hands you both without a long flight in between.

Spend your mornings tracking elephant in Amboseli or lion in the Mara, then trade the dust for sea salt on the south coast. Diani is where our clients slow down at the end. Foot soaks on the sand, long lunches, a pool to sink into once the heat builds.

We spent the morning crossing Amboseli by cruiser: elephant on the move, big skies, and that long golden grass the park is known for. The best part of a game drive here is how little you have to force it. Slow down, keep your eyes open, and the wildlife tends to find you.

We'll say it plainly: this is Amboseli on a good morning.

Snow-capped Kilimanjaro rising behind, a family of elephant working through the grass in front. The mountain sits across the border in Tanzania, but the finest view of it is from the Kenyan side, and this is where the most famous photographs of Kenya have been taken.

A few things worth knowing before you go. The swamps stay green all year, fed by snowmelt filtering down through the rock. The elephant here are some of the best-studied in Africa, and the old bulls carry serious ivory. And the peak is shy: it usually clouds over by mid-morning, so the early game drive is the one that pays off.

Go between June and October, or in January and February, when the herds gather at the water and the sky tends to stay clear. Climb Observation Hill for the whole basin at a glance, and keep your camera ready from the first light.

Sunrise/Sunsets in the Mara hits different on foot.

No engine. Boots on dry grass, francolin calling from the thicket, your guide pointing at fresh buffalo tracks in the mud.

You smell the crushed leleshwa. You spot the dung beetle. You remember you're not top of the food chain out here.

Soroi Mara is quiet in a way most Mara camps aren't. Tucked into the forest, canvas walls, a deck that gets the last of the afternoon sun. You wake up to birds, not other guests.

Game drives head out into open country from there. Herds, big skies, room to breathe.
